Evening all,

Was driving past the LGW hangars today where I saw a VS 747-400 in there. What I found interesting though is half of its tail was white and the rest in VS tail livery ? I was driving past and I couldnt stop and take too much detail, but does anyone know the reason for this half white tail ? Anyone know how long its in the hangar for ? Will try to get a picture for you all if poss.

If the different colours were split vertically, it could well of been having a new rudder fitted which, as yet, hasn't been painted into VS livery. If it was just the top or bottom of the tail, maybe it could just have bin in the process of being resprayed?

Cheers,
Ian.

Then again when you add in the SRB factor, it's anyone's guess.

It was indeed split in half.
I couldnt have sworn it was a 747-400 but I may be wrong as was only driving past !
I think it was in the BA hangar too, abit hypocritical of Branson.

Thanks for all replies

My bet would be that it is G-VSSS, the 742 which retired two weeks ago from MAN-MCO operations.

Despite the fact that BA/VS are competitors and VS often tries to 'show up' BA, the 2 do co-operate at times. SRB was even known to fly Concorde. And BA is known for helping VS at times...such as using VS slots at LHR until VS could utilise them properly, even though increased VS slots means more competition. It's how business works.

The MAN 742's were leased from Air Atlanta, so I'm guessing it will go back to them.

G-VSSS was delivered brand new to ANZ on 21st June 1981 as ZK-NZX. Before joining VS on 22nd May 2000, the only other carrier she flew for was Malaysian, being leased out as 9M-MHG from 17th March 1992 to 28th April 1993.

Hope this helps!

I think that's the DAS cargo hangar. I've seen VS aircraft in there before that were being converted. Often the VS rudder is left on as it needs to be re rigged and calibrated after painting as its such a finely balanced control. I see DAS cargo Dc10's in the same hangar so I can only guess it belongs to them!

I think you are totally correct in this, I wasn't aware that DAS has the hangar now, why do they have this at LGW ? Infact there is one in there now !

Many thanks,
