Central American Being Descriminated At LAX?

Hey everyone. got a quick question/comment

TA is the only airline at LAX (maybe a couple of MX flights) that we used to see at the far gates in the West(remote... have to take a bus to the terminal). Now they "moved to T2".

Why cant they just keep the facilities at T2 open for a little while until the Central Americans come through instead of moving them like cattle in a bus to TBIT? you never see a bus load full of japanese riding around the LAX runways on a bus after getting off their ANA flight! (or anyone else for the matter)

It broke my heart to see a really old lady (at least 80) barely holding on, standing up, with her gifts in the other hand, after a 5 hour flight in cattle class. Whats up with that huh? Any info and comments are appreciated

This post is a joke right? Plenty of airlines bus their passengers to and from the aircraft when they arrive at the Remote Gates...

Air New Zealand, Qantas, Asiana, Korean, Thai, LAN, and Air Tahiti Nui are all common sights over there..... You are not the only one!

I could be wrong but isn't price also an issue. At many airports it is cheaper to take remote gates and use buses. I will say this when I flew to LHR on either UA or AA I was surprised we got a remote gate, and we had to use a bus.

How odd, when I flew LAX-NRT on ANA back in 2000 I did exactly that, we boarded 4 large buses at TBIT and boarded the 747-400 aircraft at the remote stand. Several times I have arrived on Alaska Airlines from Mexico at remote and been bused over to TBIT. I think your comments about discrimination are way off base. Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that most of TACAs flights are red-eyes and that seems to be a busy time at TBIT, more flights than available gates.

The FIS facilities at T-2 are not open on a 24/7 basis.

With TACA's voluntary move to Terminal 2, the carrier knew very well what the restrictions were at the facility. The carrier could very easily have stayed at TBIT, however moved based on overall operational and financial benefits. Other terminal FIS facilities are also not open all day long, Americans, Delta's and United's all close much earlier then TBIT, and like T-2 are primarily geared to be open and handle traffic during peak daytime periods.

Staffing a facility especially when traffic volumes are low is very expensive and wasteful proposition. Accordingly during the late night hours all operations are consolidated to TBIT.

4 to 6 Arrivals from SJO, SAL, GUA and MGA wouldnt make this peak???
From my experience, I have taken off and landed at LAX at many diferrent times during the day. I have never seen a non-LatAm airline parked at the remote gates... Always Taca, AeroCalifornia and Mexicana.... At least thats what I've seen!

Cry me a river. Thai is almost always at the remote gates. Air Tahiti Nui seems to alternate days to the remote gates. Qantas ends up over there a lot! Aero California, damn near have dedicated gates at the end of the TBIT! Mexicana, rarely has to go to the remote gates...

Maybe you should fly through LAX, a bit more often!  yes

Its not LAX fault, its Taca´s fault. They are not willing to pay for an airbrigde for the confort of their own passangers. The airline actually decides if "buying" and airbrigde or pay a much lower price, be at a remote stand and bus the passangers.
Next time fly AA or Copa Airlines, if you want to board through airbridge.

It has been explained to you that late night, the T2 FIS is NOT OPEN. Only TBIT is open, and it would not be cost effective for the government to keep T2 FIS open. Name another airline in T2 that would need FIS at midnight.

Virgin? No.
New Zealand? No.
Air China? No.
Northwest? No.
KLM? No.
Air Canada? Maybe, but I doubt it.

I'm sorry about the little old ladies that have to take a bus. But TACA chose which terminal to be at, so you have nobody to blame but TACA.

I live in LA. I fly out of LAX ALL THE TIME. I have seen the following airlines at the remote stands:
Air Tahiti Nui
Lan Chile
Japan Airlines
Qantas
El Al
Alaska
.... and probably a hell of a lot more I can't remember.

So I guess the short answer is..... No, TACA is NOT being "discriminated" against. I guess if you want to fly to LAX don't fly TACA, if your big concern is a bus ride to the TBIT.

In reality no. There is a significant gap between the last Virgin(635pm) and Air New Zealand arrival at 730pm and the arrivals of TACA around 11pm. This would result in having a significant staff sitting around for several hours without a single passenger to process. It just happens this time frame is a busy period at TBIT, so the staff are released to go work there instead.

Accordingly the T-2 facility is currently closes by 2200-2300 For them to process all the TACA arrivals they would likely have staff on duty at T-2 until 2-3am if not latter for those stuck in secondary.

If you have an issue with how a 80 year old was treated, I'd suggest you contact TACA. They have a handling company that should have helped provide a wheel chair if one had been requested by the crew.
You can also complain about the carriers move of facilities at LAX if you feel so strongly about it.

Terminal 2, is owned and operated by a consortium called LAX-Two Corp. The owners are Northwest, Air Canada and Hawaiian.

The terminal as maybe you have noticed does have spare capacity especially in the late evening hours. In addition due to ATA having consolidated its ops in Terminal-3 in 2003 left a large chunk of ticket counters available.

The fee structure offered to TACA along overall facilities (back offices etc..) were superior versus TBIT and thus they made the move.

TACA was not forced out of TBIT, it was just a business decision leading to the move.

If LAX had the facilities, several other airlines would want to move from TBIT. Not exactly the best maintained terminal here.
Indeed, TA/LR moved voluntarily. TA/LR's flight schedule dovetails nicely with what previously had been a slow period at T-2. And as, Laxintl mentioned, coupled with the fact that the facility was underutilized made for a grand opportunity for TA/LR.
The limited hours of operation for the FIS at T-2 have been in place for years. Avianca was affected by this when they rescheduled for nighttime flying to/from LAX. Also, whenever an NZ arrival is delayed with an ETA during T-2s off hours, NZ pax will be bussed to TBIT.
In short, TBIT is the only 24 hour passenger FIS at LAX.



With a choice between changing one's mind & proving there's no need to do so, most everyone gets busy on the proof.
