TORONTO: After the bombing of its passenger airliner Kanishka two decades ago, Air India will start its service from Toronto to India from tomorrow, fulfilling a long-standing demand of Indians living in Canada.
Air India's first service from Toronto to New Delhi via Birmingham and Amritsar will take off on Sunday fulfilling a long-pending demand of Indians living in Canada, a spokesperson for the airlines said.
The flight will operate three days a week. Special security measures have been taken to protect the aircraft and passengers and to prevent incidents like the 1985 bombing, said the spokesperson.
Kanishka, a Boeing 747 flight from Toronto to Mumbai via London was blown off the Irish coast in the Atlantic ocean on June 23, 1985, killing 329 passengers, mostly Canadians.
The new Boeing 777 Air India aircraft will land at the Toronto's Pearson International Airport on May 15 evening with special guests Trilochan Singh, Chairman, Minorities Commission and parliamentarians M S Gill, Rita Sodhi and Balwant Singh Ramuwalia. The Economic Times
The article has got facts wrong. My cousin took AI YYZ-DEL-YYZ in 1995.

I wonder if they will check in at the desks at the far left end of T3 where LY does and use that special security room in the back like LY makes their pax use. The room has a special x-ray machine and you have to take your baggage there to get x-rayed before it goes down to be loaded.

Quoting BandA (Reply 6): What will the return routing look like? the same reversed? or would it be YYZ-BHX-DEL-ATQ instead?
it is going to be exact reverse, else they'll have to make arrangements for crew at ATQ, and bring empty plane to DEL to start journey afresh.

After 20 Years Air India Flies To Canada
Air India did serve YYZ in the 90s - so all these headlines etc are misleading, an too much hype is made in connex to the 1985 bombing. Of course, it is breaking news.. See also

True Aseem.
For some reason my brother keeps telling me that the ZEE reporter said YYZ-BHX-DEL-ATQ on the return! to me it didnt make sense other than perhaps they want the UK/Canadian passengers on the return flight to go through customs at DEL.
Would it be possible to do the Crew change in DEL, load up DEL pax and head to ATQ and so on more like a DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ-BHX-DEL cycle?
How are the facilities looking at ATQ? I saw the huge construction project going at the airport in january.

Anybody knows if AI is about to resume its services to FCO too? A few months ago a Milan-based AI representative told me they probably would have flown to Rome again, but I heard nothing about that since then...

I am very surprised that AI hasn't served Canada for all those years. Yes, there was an act of terror upon AI with flights from Canada (and a close call as to a second a/c of AI) but I find the long time without such service to have been a very bad business decision. Perhaps the stricter requirements for transit visas in the USA along with increasing demand, drove AI to finally return service to Canada.

See the thread starter and my Reply # 8.. AI did serve YYZ in the 90s and withdrew due to operational reasons (fleet constraints) - so the time is not so long as assumed (but definitely long enough )

Two things -
1. As of 11:45am EDT, FlyteComm is showing AI187 arriving at YYZ at 5:54pm
2. Assuming the date on the A.net photo is correct, Air India flew to YYZ until at least September 1997.

AI opened Canada service in 1982 operating 2x weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays to Montreal Mirabel.
Service to Toronto was inaugurated in January 1985 and the service became once weekly with a routing of BOM-DEL-FRA-YYZ-YMX-LHR-DEL-BOM operating on Saturdays.
Service to Canada was suspended indefinitely from June 30, 1985 following the bombing of AI 182 operated by VT-EFO by Canadian-based extremists.
Toronto services were reinstated in 1989 with a twice-weekly routing of India-LHR-YYZ-LHR-India.
In summer of 1992, the services were operated as daily flights with routings of India-LHR-JFK-YYZ-JFK-LHR-India on 5 days of the week (no 5th freedom JFK-YYZ and pax in sterile transit) and India-LHR-YYZ the remaining two days(may actually have been 5x total with 3x via JFK and 2x via LHR, I don't recall for sure).
Service was cancelled in the fall of 1992 and reinstated in summer of 1993 using a mixture of 742s and 743s. The service switched to a 742/744 mixed operation in 1993. VT-ESO even made her maiden revenue flight as AI 188 from YYZ-LHR-BOM in December 2003 after a ferry PAE-YYZ.
The last flight to YYZ was in Octover 1997 when the service was suspended due to lack of LHR slot availability when Air India's Chicago service began to be routed via London.
