AR will initiate services within Peru by starting up an offshoot airline just like they did in Chile. The airline, named Aerolineas del Peru will commence flights as soon as all the aviation requirements are met. According to Mr Mata, Marsans will have a 41% stake in the airline that will compete head to head with LA as soon as 3 month time, and on international sectors within the end of the year.
Mr Mata added that the experience held by his company (Marsans), in the field of tourism, hotels and airlines (Air Plus Comet) would benefit Peruvians through employment benefits.
This offshoot has been brought forward ahead of schedule to operate one year in advance of the scheduled start up date. Interesting times ahead in Peru.

Great news! If you consider the state of Peruvian aviation, where essentially the only full-scale airline operation is LanPeru, it can only benefit the country and tourism. I sincerely hope it will be more successful than other companies that tried and… failed (or never got to fly).

TACA Peru is limited to international short and medium-haul. It doesn't fly long-hauls from LIM as LAN does.

When writing about "full scale" I was referring to national and international flights. TACA Peru only flies nationally from Lima to Cuzco and they are hoping to add Arequipa in the near future. The number of their international routes from Lima is very respectable always a pleasure to be on them  Smile

Peru aviation is finally heating up. The demise of crappy AeroContinente has brought compoetition, with new airlines starting every week (Wayra, Aerolineas del Peru, Star Up) Very good indeed.

Star-Peru (formerly Star-Up) airlines have been around for quite a long time, at least since 2003. They operate only a handful of flights with aircraft that have seen better days. Wayra claimed they would start operations in March with four Fokker 100s, but they are still dealing with red tape... Sadly, Peruvian aviation is probably not "heating up"...

Less than 2 years means "quite a long time"?
I am Peruvian, as you guys may be able to figure out. Airlines in Peru have come and gone as often as "one hit wonders" have the music world. Besides the limited market (a majority of the country cannot afford air travel), the operating nightmares of flying into altitude, jungle, and desert, along with the poor facilities make it a very difficult place to operate an airline. Throw on top of the realities of doing business in Peru, with red tape and the high costs of having employees on payroll, and you can see that Peru is not a very attractive market.
I predict that many of the airlines we mention on this thread will disappear soon.

Guys, when it comes for Marsans you have to be carefull and believe 1/4 of their version. Aerolineas del Sur was announced to start in may04, with 735s and 744s flying international. They started months later, with only 2 732s and very good will.

See Marsans big announcements for AR. Just a small amount of their fleet renewal became actually true, besides, what happened with all the new destinations announced?

Although after all LAN and Chile/Peru mess this is the best time for Marsans to start a Peruvian airline, you have to be carefull...

Well, as you say, the Peruvian market is a difficult one and I do think that two years is quite a long time. The fact that their Antonovs are still operational and in the air is not that far from a miracle (I've flown them  Smile).

It is quite sad that only Chilean and Central American airlines are able to make such (seemingly) profitable routes worthwhile. I lived in Peru for a long time and now visit at least once a year with large groups of tourist/businessmen. If you have +40 people and have to rely on a single airline, it can get very, very difficult to move them from city to city...

I agree that one has to be careful when one takes in to consideration all the "news" that comes out of Marsans/Mata, yet AR is in a better positions that it was under the Iberia/Sepi years. Zurich opened up, the 4th 744 will arrive before the end of the year, the 732's are currently been replaced and the 733 combi will soon come in to play.
Having said that though, we are all still waiting for the 'hubs' to startup, Moscow, Athens etc still have not come to fruition.
Still though, any news is good news when it comes to the opening of new start ups especially in Peru where competition is very limited.
