International Carriers And Their Employees At IAD

Airlines like Lufthansa, KNL, Alatalia, SAS, BMI, BA, ANA, Ethiopian, and all the other foreign ailines out of IAD, I have noticed all have emloyees of their airlines decent. For instance at the Lufthansa counter, all the people working were VERY german, and it was quite apparent that their English was not great.

My question is...

Are these employees flown over daily, or are they based here in the US. Like for Ethiopian airlines, thy only have one flight a day, how could they possibly have their employees living in the US, and if they do, how do they make any money, with one flight a day... they are probably at work for like 3-4 hours a day.

Sorry I hope my question is not to confusing, ask me for clarification if needed. Thanks!

I would highly doubt they fly them in daily.

I'm sure due to their strong knowledge of the language and assistance to the airline they are paid more than min. wage. These employees probably have 2 jobs as they learn the English language, and the airport is a great way for them to communicate with others.

I understand your confusion and don't have the best answer. Maybe someone has a little more info.

They are all local employees, some with geograpical connections to the carrier, some not.

Some are even groundhandler employees wearing the airline's uniform.

They live in the United States. I think you will find they are the nationality of their respective carrier for two reasons:

A) Who else would have such an excellent grasp on the language of the carrier. Of course, carriers are looking to cater to their home passengers, Korean Air employees should speak Korean, Air France employees should speak French, etc.

B) Immigrants of their country probably want to return home, meaning a flight on Aeroflot would make sense for a Russian immigrant.

Assuming these employees work for the carrier and not a ground service company, even if the airline has 1 flight a day does not mean they have a 3 or 4hr work day. Many carriers, after the flight has departed uses those employees in other duties such as reservations (sales), etc. If these people work for a ground service company and not for the carrier then they swap between ticket counters and work for other airlines too. In MIA, I have seen them carrying a pair of different uniforms. For ex: In the morning they work for AV and in the afternoon for SR. In that case they do not enjoy full benefits from a particular carrier and their salaries are low. Usually the Station Managers are the ones tied to the carrier and employed by the carrier with benefits, etc.

I work for a foreign carrier at IAD and speak no foreign languages. I also work an 8-10 hour day 5 days a week. My airline has 1 departure daily. Some of the part time staff do work for other companies in the airport.

If I am not mistaken, check-in for Ethiopian is handled by Swissport, which also does Saudia and other airlines. It employs a number of staff of Ethiopian origin so the language issue is taken care of. In fact, I have seen eastern Europeans and Indians also doing check-in for ET. You see them in ET uniform, and have seen them in Saudia uniform as well.
