Air-India struck back at flawed media leaks related to its recent order for up to 50 777s and 787s (ATWOnline, April 27). The airline told this website in a statement that it understands copies of selected and incomplete internal reports on fleet acquisition plans are being circulated in the media and other quarters by vested interests intent on derailing the Boeing order. "This is being done to malign Air-India's management and board, mislead the public and derail Air-India's plans to acquire aircraft," the carrier said. It cited a May 13 article in Telegraph, Kolkata, which among various allegations stated that the airline is paying too much for its 777s and quoted a price of $284 million for the 777-300ER. The article even suggested that the carrier would lose money if it ordered the Boeing jets. Air-India rightly stated that this "is the catalog price." It said in its final report on the fleet selection that "it found that profits from operations with the Boeing aircraft would be substantially higher than those with Airbus aircraft." Taking on a lighter tone, the airline told this website that "it is amusing to note that those who have been circulating the selected and incomplete documents think that they can mislead the public into believing that the Air-India management and board would take a decision that would only lead to such massive losses for the company and that the government of India would approve such a proposal."

Does anyone know comparative prices for the aircrafts that AI has ordered?

I believe AI should get the lowest price possible, as Boeing will receive sovereign guarantees by the Govt. of India, much better than any contract with a private carrier.
