In June/July I will be doing my first ever trip to Asia. I would like to have some information on certain aspects of my trip. I will be flying IAD-SFO-NGO (UA), Most likely: a redeye KIX-HKT A300 (TG), HKT-BKK (TG), BKK-NRT-JFK-IAD (UA). It may reverse whether we take the redeye Thai A300 or a Thai or Singapore flight to Bangkok and on to Phuket on Thai; flying during a more conventional time of day. Here are the questions:
What kind of service does UA have on the SFO-NGO route (777)
What can I expect on a Thai redeye to Thailand or a regular daylight flight?
Is NRT-JFK all daylight since in the summer the North is almost all light, despite the Eastbound routing?

It depends on what class you are sitting in. Business or first class is nothing special compared to other int'l carriers but if this is your first experience then you'll probably be in awe.
UA in economy is exactly what you get in the states, except that you'll be on a 777, much more roomier than a typical narrowbody jet. UA also has economy plus in the forward section, so try getting those, it will be definitely worth it especially on the NRT-JFK leg. On the transpac flights, you'll get 2.5 meals: one main meal after take-off, a light snack mid-way, and a light meal just before you arrrive.
TG's economy class is nothing special. Seat pitches are standard. Try to avoid the 772s as they are 3-4-3 abreast.
On the NRT-JFK, it depends on the flight route whether the flight will be all daylight or not. If a southerly heading is taken, then you'll be flying over the Pacific until you reach Vancouver or Seattle, coming nowhere close to Alaska.
This is a likely route during the winter as the stronger jetstreams are at southerly latitudes. The second route would be skirting along the Kuriles and then into southern Alaska, passing over Anchorage and then heading down to JFK. The third will be into Russia, entering Alaska near Nome, and then heading down to JFK. The second and third routes will almost certainly be all daylight (perhaps twilight).
Kind of got long but hopefully this helps.
Also NGO is a brand new airport. Check it out because I have yet to make a visit.

Carpethead, thanks for your info! It will be really awesome if the NRT-JFK is twilight for most the flight! If fly to Germany very often (my dad is a UA employee) so I know the feeling of C and Y in the widebodies (which I like alot!) compared to the narrowbodies. Asia will be a totally new experience. I'm even trying to learn some Nihongo for this (Thai has five different intonations- I don't want to get myself into trouble for saying ka the wrong way.
Anyone know if UA still has Bento boxes in C class?

Yes they still have bento on C.
But to get it, you need to request when making your reservation.
It will likely be out if you don't request it prior to the flight.
On the 777, try to get a seat in the front C section (rows 8-9).
The small cabin makes it feel less crowded than the main C cabin.
There are only 8 seats in this section though since 9-AB are usually reserved
for crew rest. 9HJ are the best seats in C.

As much as I like that little section up front with two rows, they do not have the legroom that the other section offers (48 inches compared to 55, i think). But as we fly standby, there is no pick and choose. As long as you get on the flight, you're all set.

i've flown economy long-haul on a UA 777, and it was brilliant! staff were really friendly, as you'd expecte, and there was plenty of room. haven't flown on thai before, though SQ economy trans-pacific was also exceedingly good. hope that helps.

No these seats do have full pitch. UA removed row 8AB,HJ in the last few years over the entire fleet and replaced them with a closet. Now these seats in the mini cabin are at the full pitch since there are only 10 seats in the cabin compared to 14 that there used to be.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
