Qatar Airways A340 & A330 In Albany NY!

The "President" of Qatar is in ALB for his daughter's graduation (Skidmore College - Saratoga Springs, NY).

He had two Airbus a/c fly in for the ceremony. They are both in Qatar Airway's livery. I learned of the situation while taking a walk this morning and saw an A340 fly overhead. I knew immediately "something was up" as ALB never gets these jumbos!!

Security is very tight! I was taking photos (will upload soon!) and the local police are chasing people away.

Apparently, the President is very eccentric. According to a police dept employee who was also taking photos, the President has made some outrageous demands for his daughter's ceremony.

I'll keep you all posted as events develop!

Sorry for any spelling errors - I am having trouble opening spell check.

Great news to see the QR 330's and 340's in the US!

Do you know what the types are, 332 or 333 and 340?

Can you please upload them on the post via photobucket? Big grin

Where the aircraft in VIP config?

Rob!

I have my digital camera hooked up to my laptop, but I am having difficulty uploading...

I believe the A330 was the -200. Judging by the windows on the 340 (was not a stretch) it was in VIP config...There were only about 25 pax, probably family members??

Hopefully, photos will follow!

I had trouble uploading my own photo of the a/c @ ALB. Here are some photos of Qatar Aiways a/c taken by other a.net members. I belive I have the appropriate variations of the a/c I saw today...

I visited Qatarairways.com and it appears Qatar does not have any regularly scheduled service to the US??

The photo on top could be the VIP configured a/c in its original color scheme. Correct me if I'm wrong. The a/c I saw in ALB today were painted in their current livery.

Oh, and btw, It was the Emir of Qatar that was visiting, not the "President" as I had referred to him in the origianl post.

ENJOY!

post those photos friend. The medium sized airports such as ALB don't get a lot of attention, and I'd love to see those birds there.

The Qatari Royal flight has been bouncing around the US. They were at ORD and JFK earlier in the week.

It would have been great if they had come to SWF!

Luck to Albany for getting those great birds!

When I lived in MN, they used to have many VIPs from the Mid East fly to the Mayo Clinic for treatment with huge entourages. Since 9/11 that has apparently changed as its more difficult to get visas for just anybody in the VIP party except the immediate family and security detail. This has had a major impact in Rochester on the hotels and even the food shelves. Food shelves you ask?? Apparently many of these VIPs used to bring along a lot of their favorite fresh foods too.(MN not being known for its Mideast cuisine!) The food shelves often would get literally a ton of dates at the end of the trip as they usually brought far more than was needed.

Where did they keep the planes? I can imagine they would be over by the cargo stand or by the ANG helicopters.

I think it also had to do with the King of Jordan who was being treated at that clinic, and other dignitaries were coming to pay their respect...

Is the 7200ft runway at ALB long enough for a A340 to start and make it at least over the atlantic? I don't think so ...

The A330 should have fewer problems, but anyway it's gonna be hard ...

The A340 had no trouble taking off. It departed r/w 1 to the north and took off just past the crosswind r/w (28). It appeared so slow and heavy - It was amazing. I will post my pics as soon as my tech friend shows up!

They were parked on r/w 28 (Latham side). Very out of the way - you could not see them from the observation deck! I was questionned 3 times by local police and was asked to "move along." I came back later with my other car - hahaha.

I think so.... If Air France can fly from St. Maarten to Paris with the A340 taking off from a 7,200 ft. runway, I don't see why they couldn't.  Smile

It certainly can take off (Here at PAD we also have 7200ft and every now and then a A340), but I wouldn't be surprised finding photos on a.net when it does a fuel stop at YQX or YHZ on its way home to DOH.

I thought I saw something odd when I was over on Albany/Shaker & Everett yesterday. Quite honestly, I thought perhaps it was a 757, as it didn't look as thick bodied as a 767, A320 or 737 would. Never expected an A330 in ALB.

Hey - We get a UPS 757!  Wink

I will work on those pics tonite. I had to use a disposable camera to capture both a/c - but I am sure I can scan it and attach...By the time I came back with a digital camera, the A330 had departed.  airplane

I saw the 340 sitting out at the end of 28. Quite a sight! I have a photo in the Q. The photo has already cleared the Q in an "other" airliner photo web site. I don't think that it would be appropriate to link to that site here.

Just do a search for Albany photos at the other site. Another photgrapher also has an A340 landing photo on that site.

Cool happenings at ALB!

It was definitely a 340-200. The reg was A7-HHK (from memory, I'll correct if I screwed it up)

I didn't see the 330 but I saw a photo. I don't know the reg for that one.

A7-HHK is defintly the ruler's family's airplane. No doubt about that. But all things considered it is a surprisingly large entourage for a graduation party. Together with the A330 there were certainly at least 100+ people. Oh my god, the poor girl ...

25 Post contains links SmAlbany : I forgot that I could link to the photo that I have in the photo screening queue. Here it is: http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/A7-HHK_ALB_
26 Post contains images ALB2ATL : That's basically the photo I have - thanks for the link! Great photo btw... Everyone enjoy!
27 San747 : Very nice... It should make it onto A.net... Should quickly become popular!
