If I fly BMI from CDG to LHR and then connect to Virgin Atlantic LHR-LAX, will BMI check my bag onto Virgin at CDG?

Bag yes. Boarding pass. No. You'd still need to check in at the Flight Connections Centre for your VS flight. Just remember to show them the baggage stub from your BMI flight.
