Most people who are familiar with American have opinions about Mr Crandall and his methods of running American Airlines.Do you think he did an admirible job or what?I liked the direction he took the airline.S ome of the things like forcing out weaker competitors was subject for critism but all in all he put American among the top in the industry.Does any one know what he is doing now?And any opinions on Don Carty?

I know about Don Carty from his CP Air days, and of course today with American. He is a good old Canadian Boy who made it.
He knows his stuff, and I think he can expand American's presence in Asia.
I think that American is in better hands with Don Carty at the helm, then Crandal.
Do you think that Crandal would have initiated the new coach class seating? I have doubts

Carty has made some poor decisions (Reno Air) but has seemed to steady the ship and placed his influences on American (coach seating) rather than be Crandal Jr.

There was an article in the Dallas Morning News about Gerard Arpey (EVP Operations) stating that Arpey is an executive phenom and is poised to take over AA when Carty is done.

Robert Crandall was very driven, although some of his actions could be seen as unethical (or even immoral.) Under Crandall, American's Sabre reservation system would "mysteriously" omit competing airlines, and thus travel agents would book passengers on American, even though the competition may have lower fares.

There is a taped phone conversation in which he tried to persuade the CEO of Braniff to lower fares (attempted illegal price fixing.) Of course, before Crandall, American made illegal contributions to the Nixon campaign. There are several interesting books about American and Crandall. No one can deny the impact that he had on the airline industry (good and bad.)

I agree with Smoo. I also agree with AA Airbus 300. CrAAndal was a ruthless conniving SOB. My dad worked for AA for several years. Crandall, and the overAAll administration cared nothing about employees or pAAsengers. I was quite please to see him leave town. I am still loyal to AA. I fly them all of the time- but I never liked Crandall. But hey- there has got to be something wrong with a guy that smokes five packs of cigarettes a day!!!

I agree with smoo about Robert Crandel being ruthless like Frank Lorenzo and Carl Ichan but smoo; tone down the part of calling the pilots bastards and the FAs whores. As a relative and a close friend to 3 FAs and 2 pilots I also take great offense. Whenever your on board an AA flight and god forbid that something goes wrong then it's the fas and pilots that will save your ass despite you calling them whores and a bastards. Some the employees based in New York City will probably take you to the back of the AA terminal in JFK and kick the crap out of people like you. So I'd watch it pal. You don't want to mess with the AA crew especially based in Dallas, New York City and London.

Crandall was a ruthless competitor sometimes stooping to illegal activities (i.e. price fixing) to increase profitability. He created an air of distrust and hostility between workers and management.

That said, the innovations from AA under his leadership are unparallelled for the airline industry. AA basically invented the frequent flyer program, and it is still the best in the AAir. (I am a member of several, trust me). The reservation system was genius. The hub and spoke system is also very efficient for huge airlines.

Like it or not, Crandall changed the industry. Let's hope Carty can do the same, but with less acrimony between management and workers. The "more room" campaign is a good start, and I think it will benefit AA's bottom line in the long run.

I have looked everywhere for info on the terminal.Even the cheaply ran web site for Miami Intl airport has no photos of it.You would think that as big of a deal as American makes about the new DFW American Eagle terminal and the one at JFK that they would have something about it.In the photo I posted above it is located on the far right.Maybe what might be holding it up is that intially it has been slated for 47 gates now it it will be 58.

i agree with him too, but he wasn't specific enough. The flight attendants based out of dfw could be called whores because they are the best flight attendants in the world and they would suck you dick if they could just so you would have a good flight. Also, the argentina based crew are all bastards that deserve to die! those bitchy argentine flight attendants need some seriouse help!

Crandall did an outstanding job.Sure he had some set backs but who wouldn't.He had balls and thats what it takes in a cut throat industry.The announcement of the new terminal in Miami is probably coming soon on American's web site.From what I have heard sounds like it will be a jewel.

I was referring to the 1993 F/A strike by the Union dogs of the APFA, which was halted by Presidental order (and I mean Bill Clinton). CrAAndal was prepared to go the distance, but Clinton nosed in and halted the strike, after which the APFA proclaimed "..VICTORY from the rooftops since their little strike was falling on its face.   Of course CrAAndal took the heat for it, but what was he supposed to do?!

The 1998 pilots strike (OK, so no CrAAndal) was also created/resolved under similar dubious circumstances.

Agreed with all above, CrAAndal could duke it out with the best. He did a lot for the industry (SABRE, hub and spoke services, etc) but at the expense of employee relations.

Although Crandall became a big supporter of the hub and spoke system, he actually started it because of Delta's success in Atlanta. Delta was not one of the original "big four," but they had made Atlanta an effective hub and originated this method. American was considerably larger than Delta at that time, and they took the system to a larger level, but they were not the ones who originiated it. By the way, this is not my opinion. I read it in the following books: "Turbulent Skies" by T.A. Hepenheimer and "Hard Landing" by Thomas Petzinger.
