The list of Star Alliance airlines is growing. Who do you think will be the next airlines to join?

What about the Oneworld Alliance? Is any airline ready to joing that alliance?

Jurgen Weber declared at the entrance ceremony of SIA in Star that they are looking for and talking with a chinese member at that that would be one of the last members to join. I do not see moe partners coming in except maybe from airlines in Eastern-Europe. Star is already big enough, it offers a wroldwide network, it is simply the best alliance at this moment.

What do the airlines get out of all this?-"One airline feeds the other"?

After a Chinese airline (my guess would be China Southern) there will be no one else. The only other partner they ever targetted was SAA but now Swissair has part ownership of SAA they are out of the picture. There are no other airlines in Africa which could be considered.

The only potential other airline would be Virgin coming in via the SQ link though this is only a slim chance.

What about Eastern Europe, the other alliances have already targetted their airlines such as the Qualiflier group adding LOT, and now the Delta Air France alliance looking at Aeroflot, this doesn't leave much for the Star Alliance, the only ones that I think are may be looked at by STAR are, Air Ukraine, MALEV, Ukraine International (Although they are partly owned by Austrian and Swissair) and CSA. Although Lufthansa has a large presence in Europe, a smaller Eastern European airline would compliment the alliance, as it would provide many connections to smaller cities, as well as access to cities in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East which are traditionally passed up by the Major Airlines of the world.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Yes, Eastern Europe is a good question. I saw a documentary called Airplanski -about aviation in Russia, which is in a bit of a mess (to put it lightly).

RUSSIA is not the only country that makes up Eastern Europe!!!!! And that show is of 4 years old, I saw it as well. You have to remember that there are other airlines, that have all boeing or "western" fleets, such as CSA or Ukraine International (Which by the way is recognized as one of the most reliable airlines in Europe, with Less than 1% of their flights failing to land within one hour of the scheduled landing time) These two airlines aswell as Malev are key to the developement of eastern Europe and would be great assets to the STAR or any other alliance.

It is unlikely a Chinese airline will join anytime in the foreseeable future as they will need to drastically improve their safety and service levels. But being such a large market, I think any alliance is keen to have this market in their allliance. I think KLM/NW is alreadz looking at Air China.Having said that, servicewise Mexicana is not the best.
As for Eastern Europe, Lufthansa, Lauda, and Austrian currently have an excellent coverage in the region so perhaps it is unlikely they are looking at any Eastern european airlines.
Gulf Air or Emirates will be a good airline to add as they have excellent coverage in the Middle East as well as services to Asia, Australia and Europe.

Well Lufthansa and Austrian have great coverage of the Middle east as well so why should their Alliances look for airlines there?? For that matter, Air Canada and United have great coverage of central and south america, so why bother adding VARIG and Mexicana??

It's not about which airline has access where, but to be able to have an alliance which is established and has a hub in every major region of the world.

So STAR Alliance is still lacking an airline in the middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

I wouldn't be surprised to see EMIRATES in the Middle east, China Southern in Central Asia, and on other Eastern European (CSA, MALEV, Ukraine International) to Join STAR

I think the addition of Austrian Airlines to STAR will cover E. Europe and the ex-Soviet Union quite nicely.
