Tonight (25.05.05) between at least 19:35 and 19:55 a 747 circled Cranleigh at around 500 ft. At first I thought it was just a VERY low approach to nearby LGW, but it just kept circling. Dunsfold aerodrome is nearby, and I thought it might be landing there, but I doubt it could handle a 747! Dark blue tail, white fuselage with some titles, but not legible. Certainly not a mainstream airline.
Looked like a -200 series. Anyone have an explanation?

Thanks

Maybe they'll use it as an obstacle for "The Stig" to drive round on the Top Gear test track?

500ft! Do you know how low that is!

The MID VOR is pretty close by so maybe it was routing via that perhaps to LGW, Farnborough or maybe even Lasham.

Hi all,

Was a great moment to witness the event!

I wondered if some people in the surrounding villages may have wondered what the 747 was doing!

Here a couple of images of the aircraft on the ground at Dunsfold

If it is an European 747 why did it fly in Air Atlanta colours for the last couple of months?

Must have been transferred to EUK a wee while back. Pretty sure it did operate for EAF though, after leaving BA

Thanks for the info. And I've flown on it too - in it's BA days!

It really was low - 500' might have been wrong, but it was LOOOOOW. Also, why would it circle for 20 mins before landing? Use up fuel? Reduce speed & height over several circuits?

Vanguard,

The preference was for it to land on runway 25 hence the circuit that it went straight in to on arrival. After some discussions the ground crew thought it better for a 07 landing due to the concrete not being strong enough for the aircraft to turn on for a backtrack and plus the lack of a tug. A low approach and go around was then taken on 07 with the crew then deciding to go for 07 instead of the planned for 25. It had to keep below 2400ft because of the LGW departures but was higher than 500ft  Wink

hope this helps

Paul
