I just checked out Flightarrivals.com and it showed that AA 341 today from LGA to ORD is a 763! Is that new? I thought that the ORD/LGA route was almost exclusively MD 80's with the occasional 752.

I am surprised that the 762 isn't subed more often. They have very similar capasity even though the 762 has slightly less seats.

The 767-200 is not common, or is not used at all in operations at Dallas/DFW or Chicago/ORD. The only 4 current U.S. airports that recieve the 767-200 are Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York.JFK, and Miami. San Juan, as well if you count that!

I'm somewhat surprised that AA will swap out a 767 for smaller aircraft. That used to be common when 767s and DC-10s were used on a lot of domestic routes. But it seems that AA would rather back up the flights than try to consolidate flights to larger aircraft when there are delays.
A couple of weeks ago, DL cancelled an ATL-ORD flight operated with an MD-80. The next flight, which was also an MD-80, was upgraded to a 767-300. I haven't seen a DL 767 at ORD since early 2002.

The AA 762ER's are LAX/JFK based and rotate onto the SFO ops from there, as well as MIA and SJU for utilization. Also, the capacity is something like a 30 seat difference and the seating is different, though still 3 class.

MIA gets 762 service to JFK and ocassional routing from other major 762 cities, I flew the 762 from SFO to MIA back in February; it was subsituting the 763 that was suppose to fly the route.

San747:
Before September 11th, DL ran mostly 757s and 767s on ATL-ORD. There were also L-1011s, until they were retired. After, the route has become mostly 737s and MD-80s. I know that DL has put 757s on the route, at times, flying late northbound, and then making the first or second departure the next day.
Kahala777:
At ORD, AA just doesn't swap out planes for larger aircraft, like it did in the 90s. It used to be that virtually every flight out of ORD to beyond the Rockies was either a DC-10 or 767, and AA used to fly 767s to DFW, LGA, and even YUL.
With the DC-10s gone and the 767-300s flying so many trans-Atlantic routes, there just aren't any widebodies available to use when flights get cancelled due to weather.
AA decided to add a lot of flights between ORD and DFW, so that if flights were cancelled, stranded passengers could be put on flights to DFW and make a connection. I think AA ran 10 or 12 flights a day in the early 90s, but shortly before September 11th, that route had 23 roundtrips each day.

We had a 763 operating ORD-LGA-ORD due to WX cancellations in and out of LGA on that day.
Pax and bags from cancelled flights were loaded up and sent on their way.
