While I hate to admit it, I would have to say that the most cramped configurations in Coach that I have been on were a British Airways 747-200 in the aft-coach section, and the new 777s that Delta has had delivered.
In BusinessElite, the 777 in Delta service is unsurpassed. But in Coach, the 777s are incredibly cramped.
Compared with the MD-11s that the 777s replaced, in Coach, with the exception of the bulkhead seats (god bless Gold Medallion status!) there is about two inches less space on the 777 - and that two inches makes the difference between an average height guy (5'10) sitting with legs straight ahead, or having to sit sideways, for fear of having your knees busted when the seat in front goes back.
The 747-200 in BA service wasn't much better.
But, on the other side of the coin, the best Coach seating I have come across was also on Delta, on a Delta Shuttle 727-200 that was on a mainline Delta flight from Tallahassee to Atlanta. The pitch was about 36" - very spacious indeed for coach seating!

aerolineas argentinas really packs em in in coach on their old 747s. i am not a tall man i was cramped for the whole 8 hour flight. my connecting flight after that was on an american 757 and the the seats on the AA flight had much more leg room and seatpitch! and that was before american decided to add more by taking out 2 rows!

UK charter airlines have the following standard seat pitches in economy;
28" - Boeing 757-200 (6 abreast) 233/235 seats
29" - Airbus A320/321 (6 abreast) 180/220 seats
30" - Boeing 767-300 (8 abreast) 312/324/315/326/328 seats
30" - Airbus A330-200 (9 abreast) 361/374 seats
However, they use specially sculpted seats that provide more legroom than a normal scheduled airline for the same pitch. I'd say on a 28" seat pitch 757, the legroom is only slightly less than the 31" economy on BA's 747-200.
UK charters also offer Premium Economy on 767/A330 aircraft with a 35" seat pitch (except Monarch where it's 34")

i avoid 757's whenever possible, whatever the carrier. southwest's entire fleet is "maximum density" seating. a recent flight on a sabena A330 was quite uncomfortable. a recent flight on an air france 767-300 was quite comfortable.
it's russian roulette. you can't get straight answers about seat pitch from any carrier.

The 767-300 I flew on of Spanair was really cramped and uncomfortable. I don't know the details of the seat pitch etc, but I do know that after an 8 hour flight I almost lost the use of my legs !!!!!

The most packed into an aircraft that I ever have been was on the Federal Aviation Administrations old C-123 supply plane that is now at the transportation Museum in Wasilla AK.... There where maybe a dozen of us in parachute seats on the left side of the aircraft and about eight inches of legroom before you hit the pallets of freight that where stacked up on the other side of the cabin.....I belive that there was a car in that pile somewhere too. Any more stuff and they would have had to open the rear door for the flight. My dad was lucky and got to ride the jumpseat on the way in....... One guy was so squished in his seat he got up and climbed on top of the freight pile and went to sleep on some lumber that was being shipped.
That is the funny thing about the feds....they don't have to follow their own rules. Public aircraft you know
They most comfertable seats you will find on airlines though are on Era aviations CV-580's and Reeve Aleutians Electras. Both aircraft where certified when aircraft wheren't so packed....The electras especially...You could put a new interior in them and put more people on but with only three airplanes it doesn't make economic sense for Reeve to do that so the wider seats stay in place.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Although I'm slightly biased, Canada 3000 don't excatly "pack'em in" in their A330-200's. Their seat pitch is 30" - 32" ,comparable to Economy class in every other major airline. Their capacity is only 340Y, much less than other charters operating A330-200's.
As with their A320's, their pitch is 30" - 33" but the B757's are the worse offenders with a pitch of 29" - 30"
yet even they don't exactly compare in capactity to other charters.

I would echo that Virgin's pitch left alot to be desired. My most comfortable (non-exit row) flight was on a TWA 767-200 from JFK-MAD-JFK. The pitch was fine, the seats seemed wider and they even had footrests! I have also found the British Airways DC-10 and 767 to be comfortable, but not there 747-200s.
