I was just driving past the cargo facility at ATL and saw a World Airways MD-11 in a "retro" paint scheme. I didnt see the reg, but it had a scheme similar to the old World B707 with the old logo on the tail as well. Anyone have any info on this?

This is the a/c that will operate "Operation Babylift" next month returning 20 Vietnamese orphans back to Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) as part of the 30th anniversary of their historic last flight out.

The a/c is actually N803DE and will remain in that livery until its' return.

Already a picture of it on another site (did a quick check here, no dice.):
WO MD-11 in 1970s livery

Looks great, perhaps WO ought to repaint all of their a/c in this scheme!

That's beautiful! Gotta love the shiny metal underneath!!

How do they do that....make the metal look sooo shiny? Is it a super polish, or is it actually chromed, or painted???

Wow! This brings back memories.
My first ever flight was a World Airways DC-10-30 BWI-OAK back in 1984. The a/c looked just like this.

Ahhh, sweet memories!

They should bring back the livery - its so much better than their current generic non-livery.

My one flight aboard a World Airways DC-10 is best left unremembered.

That is much sharper looking than their current livery. Though I do prefer the red and gold livery they use to have.

Ok, I'll bite ... how do you view that photo?

My first widebody flight was back in 1983 on a World Airways DC-10 from EWR to LAX. I immediately caught the "plane" bug and became interested in commercial aviation. Before the trip on that magnificent bird I went to the local library and read everything on the DC-10 that I could find. To my dismay, I learned that the DC-10 had a checkered past with AA and THY having major crashes. Even after finding out about the DC-10's problems, it became my favorite aircraft.

Even with World's cramped seating (10 abreast) and lousy in flight service, I enjoyed the experience of flying.

It is nice to see this retro delivery and recall my first jumbo flight.

Works fine for me, I just double checked.

And still no photo of it here.......

Dude...I also flew McGuire AFB to Mildenhall! It was in 1983 on a Global 707 with a stop in Gander. What was your routing?

More very cool

They need to add the titles "WORLD" on the #2 nacelle to make it look authentic.

The photos above are from the 80s livery when they were actually doing LCC fares from HNL to the west coast. Which I had the pleasure of flying in 85.

The JetPhotos one is from the 70s Vietnam Conflict era. Way cool. Hope they keep it like that for a while.

My World Airway flights were JFK-ATH and IST-JFK in 1999 as part of a cruise I was on. My wife and I were in Business Class and the thing that amused me the most was the variety of other airlines that were represented; salt and pepper shakers from Lufthansa, carts from Aer Lingus, place mats from Delta; it was like taking 4 airlines at once. They showed film noir movies which may be the best inflight entertainment I have ever seen (since I missed the recent GIG-CDG AF flight of course.)

The DC-10s didn't enter service with World until 1977; the World livery depicted on the MD-11 was the livery in use in 1975:

So nice to see N803DE all spiffed-up and shiny again! I had the extreme pleasure of flying her from ATL to LGW in December '03 when she was still with Delta. I wondered what had happened to her...

803 really looks great. Before I looked at the picture, I was hoping it was the livery I remember for the 80s w/ the red and gold, so I was a little disappointed with that. Either way, it's great that World has decided to fancy things up for a bit.

Hey, maybe someday we'll see these colors again too:

Does anyone know if 803 will be painted back to normal boring World colors after the Special Flight to Vietnam or will it stay as RetroJet for an indefinate period of time ?

Thanks
