I don't believe there are any observation areas at London Stansted. Does anyone have any good tips for areas to try outside the perimeter/local area? I know I asked the same question about LHR (and got some great answers!) I'm looking to photograph/listen in etc.

Thanks guys

Hi Boeingbabe,
Welcome to A.net!

Maybe you already have got that impression when your post received no replies: Spotting at STN is veeery difficult!

  • From the terminal building itself you can´t see much (or "almost nothing at all").
  • Walking away from the terminal building in direction of the approaching cars might get you in trouble with the local security.
  • If you have a car with you, there are two places to check out:

According to the location your profile I assume you will go to STN via A12 and A120 ?!
Continue driving on the new A120 past the airport until you reach the last exit before the M11 (this one should have signs for "Long Term Parking" and the Stansted Hilton). Go into direction of "Long Term Parking" (LTP) and continue straight on when the entrance to LTP is on the left. Not too many yards from there people park their car on the right next to the fence (no guarantee that it is allowed, space is for not more than 2-3 cars).

Second place:
Drive back into the direction of the airport. Exit to the left @ the second last roundabout (the one before access to short term parking) and yield to the right (= driving basically in the direction of the terminal). There is a emergency gate on the left which is used as a parking and spotting space. Of course obstructing an emergency gate is illegal !

Anybody who has better information is welcome to post it here!

Hi.

Just to add my experiences. Flew once for spotting only to STN. From the terminal it's nearly impossible because of the dirty windows. We walked out of the terminal to the left till we were under the approach. Was a good location but we were stopped by the police several time and told to move away. Maybe you check out my trip report here I think I've mentioned all about spotting at STN. If not feel free to ask again.

Hi Georg,
your trip report states that you were spotting underneath the approch to rwy 23. To my calculations your spotting place should have been a approx. 2 km walk from the terminal building ?

@ Boeingbabe:
The spot Georg used is on the opposite site of what I mentioned in my reply above (which was "Round Coppice Road / Bury Lodge Lane" for the Long term parking resp. "Bassingbourne Road" for the Emergency gate): It´s on the road from Takeley to Elsenham via Mill End and Gaunt´s End just past the turn-off to Molehill Green. Problem with a car might be to find a parking place for it - maybe find the spotting place first and then try to park your car in Molehill Green ?

P.S. While been around in that area, pay a short visit to the town of Finchingfield (where the B1053 and B1057 intersect). To my judgement one of the most pittoresque town centers in Essex ...

Another spot to check out in that area would be Imperial War Museum at Duxford, Cambs. For an overview of the airfield EGSU drive into the town of Duxford and then turn into Grange Road. A few 100 yards past the bridge across the M11 is a pull-out which often attracts spotters - but bring good binoculars as the airfield is quite a distance. That´s also the place to be for the Flying Legends Airshow 09./10-JUL-2005, but on that venue, Grange Road is blocked to traffic, and parking in Duxford itself ist prohibited on these days... However, if one doesn´t want to spent the 26 GBP entrance fee, it might be worth to get into that spot (i.e. Grange Road).

Have fun,
Holger

It was a long long and overall dirty walk. Not to recommend after rain and if it's cold outside.
