My employer, United Airlines is sponsoring a so called "Fantasy Flight" tomorrow morning. However, unlike most of the other ones that I've seen or read about, we're going to a lil bit extra. Just like Lagniappe!

For starters, we're going to have one our 747-400's dedicated our use tomorrow morning. Complete with brand new United Suites. The A/C will be arriving from Mobile AL and after the publicity tours for the media and probably most of the MSY airport staff we will begin boarding. This particular plane is configured for 370 seats and they will all be probably full. Of course local schoolchildren will get the most of them, but some media and local politicians will also be on-board.

Again, we're going to go just a little different. Not content to just taxi to the far end of the airport, we're actually gonna FLY the plane. Only for about 30 min or so, but we are gonna indeed fly!

Many of my co-workers have alot of time and resource$ invested in tomorrows festivities, not to mention the the commitment that UAL had to make.

If anyone in the New Orleans area is interested in a ramp and A/C tour tomorrow, please call me this afternoon/evening at 504-236-9680.

Mark from UAL @ MSY

Greetings Mark...

Darn!!! I wish I had not moved out so soon!!! If I still lived down there I'd have called in sick to work!! What an interesting event that would be

What was the big jet doing in MOB? It must've been over at that other field they have over there, right? Was that where they did the conversion? do you get to go on the "fantasy flight"?

Maybe you can post something after the event and let us know how it went. What was the plane's flight plan for that short flight?

Hey Bruce,

Yep, MOB is where they do the modifications on the 747's for UA. They've actually been doing a bit of pattern work at MSY over the past few months. Mark on I will be on the ground shooting pictures. As for the flight path, we'll have a scanner with us, so we'll be somewhat able to follow him.

Well unfortunately, I won't be in town........however, if you take some pictures, PLEASE post them on airliners.net. I would be forever in your debt. What a sight that should be.....a 744 at MSY!

Hey guys, I was wondering how the day went? Too bad I wasn't in town.....I would have jumped all over the chance to see a 744 in good old MSY. The last 747 I saw in MSY was after the Super Bowl in 1997. They had an AIA and some white and green one(former Saudia maybe) out there. And this does not have to do with the topic per say, but I have a couple of questions about United in New Orleans. 1) Why was the early-morning flight to DEN cancelled? I think it left around 6am. 2) Do the 757's usually fill up to LAX, IAD, ORD? Thanks alot guys. Hope to see ya'll in MSY one day.

Stephen

Mark from UA can do the Fantasy Flight update, it was interesting to say the least, yes we both got pictures, and yes, the plane did break down afterwords.

MSYTristar, as for the green and white 747 that was in for Super Bowl a few years back, yes it was an old Saudia airplane. And yes, UA is filling most of their flights. I'm not sure why the early DEN flight was cancelled, Mark might know. Probably they either didn't get the traffic they needed, or the plane was needed somewhere else. If any of the pics from yesterday look good, I'll send you a couple.

Well, I guess those kids are getting a taste of the real world of aviation: delays caused by breakdowns!!

OK guys, here's how it happened.

The 747-400 landed at about 8:15 on Tuesday morning and then after boarding it left on about a 45 min tour of the area over the city. No, I didn't personally fly on it but Tom and I should have some VERY good pictures.

Neraly anyone....and I do mean anyone that had ramp access woulda been able to get on board. We had some employees from nearly every airline including Fedex and UPS on board as well.

The tri[p made about 4 or 5 passes over the city and nver got above 3,000 ft. musta been quite a sight for the folks on the ground. I also understood that several very tight turns were made to give the kids on both sides a chance to see out. Imagine if you will flying above a major metropolitan city in a 747-400 at 3,000ft!

After landing and deboarding the battery switch nver got turned off and during the course of the day the batteries got drained and just like a car, when they get too dead then ya can only replace them. Unfortunately the flight that was carrying the parts in from IAD took a major maint delay of neary 2.5 hrs. Yes, by the time the parts got in and replaced, the crew that was gonna ferry it out went illeagal. End result was that Flt 881's segment from ORD to NRT had to be cancelled that afternoon! Supposedly it was gonna leave this afternoon at about 11:00.

The actual "Fantasy Flight" went off perfect. Everything from the weather to the flying to two of my co-workers getting jumpseat rides. I'm sure that the children and some of the adults are still talking about it now.

MSY Tristar; the early AM DEN flight was discontinued because the plane was needed for other routes. I promise it was not because of the load factor. However, it was all that we could do to get 4 flights out on time on the morning, including two '57's with only three gates and yet five flights on Sunday mornings.

Sounds like fun! I am looking forward to helping out at some Fantasy Flights in the future, if possible!

Quick question for ya--Did the crew go illegal before or after they departed?

Thanks!

No, they went illeagal before they departed. Wouldn't have been a problem except the inbound plane carrying the parts was very late.

Good for United! very nice gesture.

Does United do this "Fantasy Flights" in all its destinations around the world?

Here in Argentina they been doing it for a few years (also they do it in Uruguay). Last Christmas the children boarded a B777 in Buenos Aires and they flew for an hour to Mar del Plata coming back to Ezeiza airport. UA crews enterntained the children, Mcdonald´s provided the meals and Esso the fuel.

No, I don't forsee the early AM DEN flight returning anytime soon.

As far as our '57 LAX, flight, next week on the 4th that flight is gonna revert to an A-320, but only for about a month. I'm not sure of the date, but it's supposed to be a '57 again in mid June. I'm not particular sure I understand this one. With all of the mail, and seafood, not to mention the pax and their luggage we never have any weight restrictions with the '57. I remember many times off-loading the Airbusses because of some weight and balance issues.

For some reason our LAX flights fluctuate in the 90% capacity areas. Our early flight to DEN (781) continues on to LAX and a hefty percentage of the pax continue on to LA also.

Arriving from LAX on Sat nights is 1001 and returning to LAX on Sun morn is 1002. That's almost always oversold every week. Usually UAL will have a 319 for that, but this past weekend they sent us a 320 which let us accomodate the pax that would been displaced if we had gotten the 319.

At least in South America similar "Fantasy Flights" are done by other airlines too. Delta did it on Christmas in Brazil, flying its MD11 from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro and back.

Aerolineas Argentinas did the same in Buenos Aires.

UAL did something very similar here in Omaha about 2 years ago with a 777. At first, I thought the plane was a replacement for a nightly OMA-DEN DC-10 flight. Instead, they were giving disabled children rides. I believe they did this in other cities too at the time, not sure which though.

I know in BOS, United does hour-long "North Pole" flights. They depart a few days before Christmas, take-off, fly for an hour, then land at BOS, except at a different gate, where it is closed off, and inside is a festive "North Pole" (actually, it's usually the next gate over. Then after a while, the kids (all underprivileged inner-city kids) board the plane (usually a 757), then fly back to BOS again, and go home. They've done this programme for a few years now, and I think it is a wonderful opportunity for these kids, who otherwise would't get much for Christmas anyways, to enjoy Christmas, and have fun. Anyone know the book The Polar Express, well this is it, but instead of a train, it's a plane.
