EK 345 Stopover At SIN?

Why did that 345 direct flight to Melbourne suddenly start a temp stop at SIN?
I saw a picture in the database and the comment noted that the runway at melbourne is too short for the aircraft to depart safely.

How come this happened all of a sudden? and if thats the case, then why did EK assign a 345 for that route? wouldn't such an issue appear during the planning stages? i dont know!

I have searched the forum database for this topic and found nothing, so if i missed something, i am sorry

Melbourne's main runway was undergoing some repair works, hence it was closed. The shorter runway was used for takeoff and landing, and EK felt that the A345 could not depart safely using the shorter runway for a direct DXB flight, hence the stopover for fuel.

Ok .. That makes sense then! .. I was baffled for a bit and didnt think of the possibility that another runway could been temporarily closed for repair.

the 744 flight from MEL-LAX had to go via SYD during the runway works as well.
All i can think of right now is the A345 service from EK to DXB and the QF service from MEL to LAX were effected by the runway works in Melbourne.

And by the way, the runway has now re-opened as it states here.

According to the link above, the runway is in service again since 4th May, the same day the picture has been taken  Wink

I flew the same pictured aircraft A6-ERH on the EK407 SIN-DXB sector in late April. Boarded at the same gate as seen actually!

I learnt onboard in conversation to passengers and crew that in some circumstances not even EK cabin crew were aware of the fuel stop-over in SIN until during the pre-flight briefing in Melbourne. It was good to hear the flight crew knew though!

Excellent service onboard and the in-flight entertainment was out of this world. Hundreds of films, music albums, documentaries, e-mail, SMS and information channels all on demand. The flight was in complete darkness and departure out of SIN and arrival into DXB in the early hours, but service throughout was impeccable.

A good temporary move by EK which suited my travel arrangements perfectly!
