Australia's transport minister has assured Australia that no employees at SYD have any terrorist links. The assurance comes after unions claimed many airport contract workers still access restricted areas without undergoing full background checks. A secret Australian Customs Service report, completed last September, found some airport workers have been involved in drug smuggling and stealing, while some could pose a terrorist threat. 39 security screeners out of 500 at the airport had serious criminal convictions.

Oh this has caused a stir here (well I'm from Sydney and near KSA)
One stat that sticked out for me is that apparently 10% of the security screening staff have some kind of criminal record! I'm not someone who believes if someone has a conviction, they shouldn't get work. But when it's security at the country's "gateway" airport, makes you wonder.....
