Taca Flying With No Air Conditioning!

MGA-SJO on the ATR. NO A/C!!! Everybody complains about sufocation, its in the tropics, have seen people having trouble breathing! Is this illegal? Can passengers sue TA?

Had about 12 flights with TACA in 2004: All was o.k., no technical problems, average service.
But no plane should depart without ac.

Chances are that the a/c packs, which also control pressurization, failed. Thus under 10 000 Ft. MSL, the aircraft is flyable, albeit unpressurized.

There is nothing in the contract of carriage about this. I agree that the airline should have alerted passengers about the lack of a/c onboard, but the aircraft is safe to fly.

This isnt a one time incident. I've flown this route 3 times and I get the same crap. I know about 4 more people that have told me the same. Evrytime we get some b/s about the problem being at that certain moment...

Plus, all of you that have been to Central America know what kind of heat you feel, and a group of people jam packed in a plane is a risk, somebody can sufocate or have medical problems.

Having flown dozens of times on the Isleña (taca) ATR's, they are a bit unconfortable until engine start then it is not "suffocating". but not great also. With TACA's budget and name on the line they should at least change the airconditiong system on the ATR's because since they are among the "oldest" ATR's the A/C system on them was not designed for operating in the tropics and it was changed after several years due to this type of claims by operators.

I don't believe suffocation occurs when people are not sufficiently cool. There is always plenty of bleed available for fresh air....the rest is simply "comfort" related.

I don't think there should be a law against being uncomfortable. Stuff happens sometimes.

Trust me, its not the heat you feel at the freeway in traffic, were talking 40 people or so in a plane with no open spaces, no airflow and 100 degree weather plus horrible humidity... They even had an emergency about a week ago where people complianed they felt they were suffocating on the flight.

Yes I know about hot and humid; you can break a sweat at 7 am just crossing the parking lot at the Managua airport.

That being said, if the MEL states that it is safe to fly, then it is safe to fly. A bigger inconvenience is having the flight cancelled. Still, I wouldn't care to suffer in the heat and humidity on such a packed plane with weak or no a/c.

Next time take the CM flight on a B73G.

While flying as well... Ive been with out a/c all the way to SJO and sometimes about 15 min before landing (hour long flight)

I guess the A/c and some Pax ammenities (such as working lavs and exits/ramps) are on the MEL, I would not bet my house on it but I am sure that A/c MUST be on the MEL.

On a lighter note, it reminds me of the Urban legend where a Pax complained that he could not open his window!!!

Don't think the ATR's are that good for hot climates...several trips on Eagle out of MIA have been exactly the same. Had external air while boarding but once sealed up and taxiing it became oppressive and did not get better until about 8000 feet. Same deal on an old ex USAir DC9 flying out of CCS to Aruba. This time no ground ac..cabin boarded full and hot...and did not get better until about 10k...the max altitude on the trip over. Jetstreams were also notorious for poor ac on the ground as well.

Having flown the route a couple of times in DC9s, the flight levels typically used between CCS and AUA in a DC9 are 20,000 22,000 24,000.

AUA - CCS are usually flown at 21,000 23,000 25,000

What airline did you fly between CCS and AUA?

Nothing new about comfort inside the ATR on hot weather. I flew plenty of times BRO-IAH-BRO and it was a nightmare!! On one of the last flights I took during the summer (100° F), the flight attendant kept saying that CO Express was migrating to an all jet fleet with much comfortable cabin...
