CDG has introduced a 6 month period test using biometric data, which according to them will increase security and at the same time allow people to pass controls more rapidly since only the fingerprint will be required. The fingerprint matches data which says if you are all in order. more details here.

what do you think of this method?

I think it's great! AMS has had this round for much longer. Anything that goes faster and is still safe is good I guess  Smile

Sounds like a good idea. There was a story running in the British media a couple of weeks ago about the testing of similar technology (that would be used in the UK's identity cards if we ever get them). Apparently the iris recognition technology has a high failure rate, particularly when scanning the eyes of Black people. No doubt lots will be done to get it right, but I don't think biometrics are necessarily the cure-all technology the manufacturers would have us believe!

Biometric data is great. Retinal scan when you get into a country and your not allowed to leave immigration until a background check is complete. And then another scan when you are about to get onto a plane. With the computer systems that are out today I do believe its possible.

On a similar note...

Has anyone tried this at FRA? Apparently signing up is free and you can go through security much faster. I go there often enough to consider doing it. Any comments?

Thanks,

Tony

Since this is my field I will comment on it.

Recent advances with storing fingerprint data on smartcards work pretty well. For access control it's quite useful and most often very accurate.

Depending on the reader it can either go smoothy or be quite a pain. Some readers are very bad and require a head cleaning after every read. Others can see through smudges and still get good reads. The back end also has a great deal of importance. If the data is going to a PC there can be delays a finger being presented to the reader and when it generates a valid read, versus the data being stored at the reader which is quite fast.

I have seen sites install biometric readers to great fanfare only to pull them out because they were slow and inaccurate.

To be fair, you don't need biometrics to mess up the data.

2 big IT annoyances:
- Salesmen and their promises.
- Lack of proper testing. No matter how many times you go through projects, the first thing that gets cut when there are delays is testing time, the most important thing in the project...

As a very frequent flyer from AMS, I have a Privium-pass, which is absolutely superb! Just let my iris get scanned and get trough customs very quick and no queing behind the mass!

Cheers!  wave
