Both Fort Lauderdale and Miami are groundstopped for all second-tier arrivals (Atlanta, Fort Worth, Houston, Jacksonville, Memphis, Miami, and Washington Centers) until 3:00 PM today...if you are flying to South Florida, you may want to try to catch an earlier flight, or try to connect through outside of those areas.

What is meant by "second-tier" arrivals? Just curious.

He explained it, sort of, flights originating inside the listed Air Traffic Control centers.

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Johnboy-It's ATC-speak. Fort Lauderdale and Miami are in Miami Center. All flights from Centers adjacent to Miami Center (Houston and Jacksonville) and bound for Miami Center are first-tier arrivals. All flights from Centers adjacent to Houston and Jacksonville Centers (Atlanta, Fort Worth, Memphis, and Washington) and bound for Miami Center are second-tier arrivals, and so on, although very rarely does a groundstop apply beyond second-tier without it being either for all flights, or a specific mileage.

damn, and I got a flight to BDL today. The good news is that the plane is coming in from BOS and it'll be a fun day to view the commotion in the DL terminal!

and I do have 2 diversions for FLL to mention:
WN518 ISP-FLL diverted to PBI for the second time in a week...Yikes!
WN211 BWI-FLL diverted to TPA...a little out of the way?
I guess that not having the life jackets yet has cost WN some routes that would
a) save fuel
b) get the plane to FLL!

AC916 YYZ-MIA went to RSW as well as US374 ORD-MIA
CO454 EWR-PBI went to MCO and DL1784 ATL-PBI went south to FLL...Indy 41 IAD-PBI went to MCO as well
I'm also curious, I've seen DL9976 MIA-MIA pop up a few times this week on flight tracker. It said MIA-MIA on delta.com too. What is this flight doing?

FLAIRPORT-Now the bad news...departures from FLL are generally delayed 1:15 and increasing, MIA generally delayed 2:00 and increasing...not a good day to be travelling from South Florida.

Drerx7-It is POURING, and Thundering and Lightning...contrary to what the FAA might think, it isn't getting better anytime soon (likely will be Saturday before the skies clear up)...:-(

Well, I still got to 6:55pm and the plane from BOS should be close to on time. No delays yet, but if its an hour I'm ok with it and any more and I'll go insane. The horrible part though is that it is a Delta points flight and there are no other flights to BDL that night.

FLAIRPORT-DL1684 and DL764 FLL-ATL, along with connecting DL286 ATL-BDL are both wide open if you need them...BTW, the ground stop in Miami has just been lifted, however, the Fort Lauderdale ground stop remains in effect.

THANKS shpIRATE...the thing is that I am getting to the airport around 5:15...so unless at 5:40 1684 is dead on time and 2082 is 2 hours late (which I honestly think will end up being the other way around) I'm stuck on 2082. thanks anyway

LOL...funny you mention that...I was on a US Airways flight on Tuesday, scheduled CLT-PBI, that diverted to TPA.

Don't feel too bad, the same is forecast for ATL and possibly the rest of us up and down the East Coast. I've been checking my company's website: FL and so far this week my last RON flight of the night 1762 ATL-BWI has been at least an hour late the last three nights in a row. I've been out sick from work due to a nasty staph infection which has made my upper lip and part of my nose swollen. Like I was in a fight on the Sopranos! If I was at work with this affliction I bet I would be asked if I got into it with distressed passengers! My Staph Infection is hanging around like some of these storm systems messing things up in Florida, and the Southeast states. Which, leads me to:

I can't say. I've not been checking up on the weather like I would if I was at the airport working. May I suggest visiting http://wwwa.accuweather.com/index.asp?partner=accuweather.
Best of luck to you.

Um...buddy you have it the other way around! FLL delays are much worse than MIA, hence the 10000000000 posts and articles that have been written about this lately; prime example = JetBlue @ FLL.

This post should come as no surprise to anyone on here, SoFla and the South Eastern U.S., Caribbean etc... are prone to heavy "Summer Thunderstorms" and Weather..not to mention Tropical Weather Systems so these delays happen every year and will continue to happen til about October or so.
It is just a matter of luck...

That comment was specific to yesterday, and bore no significance to what usually happens...I was not saying that delays into MIA were generally worse than FLL (they aren't, FLL is a nightmare, and MIA is under capacity), I was saying that, yesterday, the information the FAA was giving stated at that particular point in time that MIA's average delays were 2 hours and increasing, and FLL's average delays were 1 hour, 15 minutes and increasing. That bore no resemblance to what usually happens, of course, but it was quite true yesterday.
