Southbend will also draw from both MI and OH to fill the planes.

Ha ha! From Catholic Central to Sin City! I love it!

Great to see the Bend get some new service, after all the route closures in the recent past. Hopefully, this will come to fruition, unlike AC's YYZ-SBN plans from a few years ago.  crossfingers

AC had plans for YYZ-SBN? Wow, that's pretty interesting.

The Allegiant flights will be ground handled by Air Wisconsin (United Express) (where I work   ) I'm actually quite looking forward to working the flights since they will be MD80s and a variation to our ERJ/CRJ presence.

We know for you it's not just a seat on a flight to a place. It's a seat on a flight to your life.

Training might begin for you all in July but I'm pretty sure the service isn't starting until August. We have this little problem of not enough aircraft at this time but by August we should have the aircraft in place.

Another city that seems to fit the Allegiant mold. Although I really would have thought maybe Fort Wayne would have got the service over SBN since SBN is closer to the Chicago area. Pretty busy week for those guys along with the announcement of Green Bay. Anyone venture to guess where the next city could be to LAS? Evansville, IN, Duluth, MN, or Rochester, MN all seem like they would fit the bill...

SBN is a nice terminal, but the Studebaker shoved in the middle of the ticketing counters to replace the losses of US and ATA looks kinda tacky. When I went to college in VPZ I used to love the US ERJ 145's direct to PIT. And how can you beat the fact that the South Shore train pulls right up to the terminal?

Notre Dame aside, Northern Indiana is VERY Lutheran. Just look down the road at Valparaiso, the Notre Dame for Lutherans lol. The fact that they're going to be running people to Vegas though seems a tiny tiny bit risky... with all the casino boats floating up on Lake Michigan right in SBN's backyard.

I think the draw of Porter/Lake Counties will do alot better for SBN than the vast nothing that surrounds FWA.

Oh yeah! AC had a very ambitious plan of 3 daily YYZ-SBN-YYZ flights. I so wanted some of whatever they were smoking!

Here's a link to the article, from WNDU, no less!

I haven't been back to Michiana Regional Transportation Center in a while now. So US is gone and so is ATA. I think AA's ORD-SBN flights are gone too.
I used to take US to IND and PIT all the time. Did they also used to fly to CLT?

And I loved the South Shore! So convenient and almost in the terminal!

LOL! Is that what they call Valparaiso? I went to college at ND and never heard Valpi called that!

Hahaha... I wouldn't say "They." It's what I, a Catholic stuck in Valpo, called it. Now we just prefer to call ourselves the better volleyball team since we can't do better than come up just short against them in basketball.

How could SBN have had YYZ flights though... that's not an "International" Airport? AC runs two B1900's from here at ABE to YYZ. From what I saw the one day walking through the terminal at boarding time for them... they can fill them at least some of the time.

Flying a few weeks ago through SBN to get to VPZ for my girlfriend's graduation... Delta was having VERY nice loads on their CRJ's. The ATL flight was an hour late and arrived within a minute of the CVG flight. It was kinda funny seeing 2 CRJ's (my first ever -700, going to CVG!) lined up diagonally beside each other as if they were parked at a mall or something... and confused pax trying to figure which plane was going where. First time I ever saw several people actually getting up to get off when the FA made the announcement "This is Delta/Comair flight xxxx to Cincinnati. If you are not going to Cincinnati please alert me immediately" The gate agent was announcing "Get on the BIG plane to Cincinnati, and the cute little plane to Atlanta" DL should be making money on these routes... yes I know "Full planes dont = full profits" but my tix cost nearly $400, bought 6 weeks in advance... so they should be able to make some money doing that. When we took off... our plane, the ATL flight, a United/Chautauqua ERJ, and a Mesaba SF-340 all got in line... behind a Cessna. Hearing "Ladies and gentlemen we are #4 in line for take-off" at SBN was amusing.

Oh yes, Air Canada's South Bend service. It went just as well as Kalamazoo...and Greensboro...and Greer...and Norfolk...and Austin...and Ontario...and Daytona Beach. I swear, AC doesn't do route market reserach. They announce a flight, see how well it books, and then decide to fly it or not.

LMAO! I think Valpo would beat ND at any sport these days. Unless it's a women's team, then ND's on top!

Well, WNDU did suggest they rename it to South Bend International Airport!

One of my friends here in ATL is a nurse and she has to fly to SBN all the time for work at Memorial. She says she almost never gets a seat on the non-stop ATL-SBN flights and almost always ends up connecting through CVG.

Although I really would have thought maybe Fort Wayne

SBN will draw Chicago traffic, not to mention there are Casino Express 732 charters to LAS, ALL the time at SBN.

Either way, it'll be great to see something other than CRJ's all the time (not that CRJ's are bad!)

Any ideas if they may want to give TOL a whirl? It may be a reason why they didn't do FWA and LAN is still too far north to draw pax from that city.

By saying SBN isn't international, I more referred to the fact that (to my knowledge) they don't have any customs facilities there... not just their name. "Michiana International Transportation Center" would sound pretty funny... "South Shore Railroad... with service to Dune Park, Hammond, and Toronto" haha. There are smaller airports than SBN which do have customs (ERI comes to mind) so I assume it could happen... but the costs associated might have been prohibitive.

I wonder with all the full (and expensive) Comair/ASA flights into SBN if there is any chance of bumping some more of those flights up to those rocket-ship CRJ 700's... or the EMB-170's they are supposedly getting in the not-so-distant future. CVG-SBN would be an ideal hop for a Q400, but keep dreaming. Guess it doesn't matter to me, I'm graduated and living 700 miles away and my girlfriend graduated and went to that "other" school down in LAF for her MS, so my SBN days are over.

It's nice to see a little action at good ol' SBN. I use to work the ramp at COEX back in 1996, it used to be a fairly jumping airport back then. Now we just have to get COEX back in there with RJ service to either IAH or EWR, or at least upgrade the current CLE service. Quick question, is Allegiant planning on using the old USAirways jetway, or are the Mad Dogs going to be hard-standed near the Air Wisconsin gate. Thanks.

According to faremeasure.com, LAS is the #3 destination from SBN at 76 pax per day with an average fare of $151.23. I think it makes sense, hopefully they'll do well.

Also, with regard to AC's previously proposed YYZ service... it would have probably used the U.S. customs agents that are at most Canadian airports. Pax between Canada and the U.S. usually clear U.S. customs in Canada.

Sunking737,

I haven't heard anything definite yet on what happens next at SFB. I can tell you that while the loads are really starting to pick up on the LAN, DSM, and PIA routes, I am very dissapointed on the MSN run. And this company normally won't stick around on a route that doesn't produce fairly quickly. And yes, this new hub is keeping me quite busy.

Rgds,

AtcRick

LOL! Doesn't matter much to me either, since my SBN days are long over too. I graduated in the late 90s and haven't been to SBN by air since then. I am thinking of going there for a day or two later in the year, but I will probably drive down from ORD when I'm in Chicago for work.

I do want to stop by the airport and see what it looks like.

SFB-CRW and SFB-CID would be another great choice, I know CID loads to LAS have been great along with DSM-SFB.

I've noticed by the fares the loads aren't too good.

It's amazing the demand Allegiant creates to LAS. Passenger boardings from DSM-LAS are up over 30% since Allegiant came, and LAS is now the #1 destination from DSM.

Next flights: WN DSM-LAS-PHX, US PHX-SJD. Return: US SJD-PHX, WN PHX-MDW-DSM
