What's up with all these private jets taking off from non active runways. When I am out spotting at CCR, LVK, OAK, and SFO I see private jets request for, and take off from non active runways with the wind at full X wind or tail wind. Is this safe? and why are they cleared to do this?
I think (and I stress think) that this is to make up for taxi time and not have to taxi all the way acrost the airport to take off. But IM not sure.
If u could answer this question that would be grate!

As long as you are within the crosswind and tailwind limits AND within runway length requirements for your weight you can take off in any direction the runway points.

Starlionblue is correct. Also, this reduces the conjestion for the heavy iron using the active runways, and shortens the ground time for the biz jets.
Regarding maximum tailwinds, for example the maximum tailwind component for a Citation CJ3 business jet is 10 knots for takeoff and landing.
