SEATTLE - Three dozen Alaska Airlines workers watched in federal court Thursday as union lawyers asked a judge for an emergency order putting them and hundreds of other furloughed employees back on the job.

KOMO NEWS ALERT: A judge in Seattle declined this afternoon to reinstate 472 ramp workers laid off by Alaska Airlines. Lawyers for the 472 laid-off airline workers had asked a judge for an emergency order putting them and hundreds of other furloughed employees back on the job.

While I feel sorry for the average person for loosing their jobs, they can only however blame themselves and the IAMAW.

During negotiations the company clearly presented what comparable cost were using a 3rd party handler and made it clear to the union would need to match those overall numbers via required savings.

When the Seattle ramp group rejected what was billed as the companies last and final offer they provided the company the green light to contract out the jobs. The Company had been negotiations with the union for two years, and could not continue over paying for a service it could receive outside at substantial savings.

A massive miscalculation on the part of the Alaska rampers and their union.

Imagine for a moment telling your 15 year old son that you're kicking him out of the house unless he can get his yearly costs down to that of the 2 year old you're thinking of adopting to take his place.

That's essentially what took place - it wasn't a negotiation, but extortion by demanding what they knew were impossible terms.

Absolutely 100% true. The company never negotiated in good faith. Their goal from the outset was to kick the rampers off the property.

The court is (sadly) correct though - the IAM foolishly allowed a clause in their contract back in 1985 permitting the company to outsource jobs if they could find an outside vendor to perform them more cheaply.

True, as negotiation dragged on year after year the terms got worse and worse as the company needed greater and greater relief as it continued to pay what is considered were unrealistic rates.
Very similar to what US Air went thru with some of its unions.. the longer talks dragged on the amount needed climbed as the company needed to recoup the additional salaries and cost paid out during the feet dragging to achieve the same overall yearly savings as if an agreement had been reached earlier.

The union was warned, but just never believed the company would act on its threats.

I hope the CO FA's are reading this. As well as the field services people voting on whether to unionize or not. There's a big message here.

This is disingenuous at best. These "unrealistic" rates are still being paid to AS rampers that are still on the job - the company essentially said, "If you want to keep SEA employees on the property, you ALL have to take a pay cut to do it."

And lest we forget, the company started with a $2M figure, which jumped to $12M at the next meeting, and then $18M. That's not "needing greater relief," but moving the bar to unreachable levels because you don't WANT them to be reached.

That is what the company did.

I wonder how many other contracts have such a clause in it or was it just the AS contract ?
