Yesterday (April26) i was a passenger on Midwest Express flight#58 from OMA-DCA. We took off from OMA right on time and immediately the food was served.About 35 minutes into the flight the captain came on and said that due to a maintenance problem we were diverting to MKE. He went on to say that he had been in contact with the maint. people at their hdqtrs. there and they advised a divert to MKE, rather than attempt to fix the problem upon arrival in DCA. Upon landing at MKE the customer service agents came on board and told us we would be put on a regular schedule Midwest Express flight from MKE-DCA leaving in about 90 minutes. We got off the plane and at the gate where we arrived were given new seat assignments and vouchers for 50% off of a future Midwest express flight.In all my years of travel and flights that was the first time ever i experienced a flight diversion due to mechanical problems. With the short notice the ground crew had of our arrival, they were the most courteous, efficient, professional and helpful ground staff i have ever encountered. I am a member of several frequent flyer programs and have a total of close to one million miles. In some programs i am premier status level and get treated just like its an effort, in situations far less than an emergency diversion.
When we came time to board the flight from MKE-DCA they was a chance the flight was now oversold and they were looking for volunteers to give up their seat for a free ticket. Such an irony, could have collected another free ticket. but it turned out that the plane left with every seat full and no one had to give up their seat.
We took off from MKE about 10 minutes late and then got served a sirloin dinner that was the best meal i have had in a domestic airline. it really was delicious. And this was in coach, it was vastly superior to what is now being served in first class on many domestic airlines.
Off all the frequent flyer programs i belong to i have the least mileage in Midwest Express. Thanks to all that was done for us and how the situation was handled i will be traveling much more on Midwest Express.
I know airline executives monitor airliners.net. may i be bold enough to tell the competition, especially AA and UAL-----WAKE UP. Learn somethings from this experience.
Anyway, does anybody out there have any idea what the maintenance problem could have been that caused the diversion? Was it possibly that serious or not? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 747firstclass

Based upon the info in your post, it doesn't appear to have been an emergency or anything serious (or they'd have briefed passengers and prepared the cabin for the landing at MKE) Quite simply, it was probably something that couldn't have been fixed at DCA should your flight have contined there. No airline that I know of has their own hanger/MX folks/full parts inventory at *every* airport they serve, and thse types of resources are usually at the airline's handfull of hubs. Whatever the problem was, it certainly appears that the return flight from DCA-??? would have been grounded awaiting parts and repairs.
As a dispatcher, I see this all the time, and it's a common practice (as always, depending on the situation) to get the aircraft to where it can best be repaired, MKE in your case.. Diverting to MKE, and then canceling the DCA-??? return flight (assuming passengers could be protected on other flights) probably freed up enough time to fix the aircraft at MKE, and then "plug it back in" to the schedule. When fixed, it could have then ferried to ??? to continue its planned sequence of flying, or if MKE was ???, could have continued from there.
The name of the game is to *always* contain the inconvenience to the smallest number of passengers (on all flights) possible, and keep the airline running safely. Sounds like Midwest Express did just that...

First of all, Thank You. As a customer service supervisor for Midwest, I always appreciate the compliments, as this is always our goal. I wish I could remember the exact reason this diversion took place. I think it was an unusual vibration coming one of the engines. I do know it was a precautionary landing meaning no one was in any danger, but it was odd enough to make the pilots take notice. It was most definatly NOT caused by any stabilizer problem. Our fleet has all been checked and we are in the clear for that. Thanks again for the compliments! Hope you do fly us more often!
