Quoting AkjetBlue (Thread starter): Did the B737-200 get new engines to meet noise requirements? What happened to the ever so beautiful clam shells?
Are you talking about the attachment at the back of the engine? If so, that is some sort of hush kit device to reduce noise and meet at least stage 3 noise requirements. I don't know (and don't think) that they meet stage 4 requirements though. It is the same engine, just with this attachment. Look at some of the European pictures of 73S's during the 1990s in Europe. I am sure that you will see the same thing. Probably, there are quite a few Ryanair shots that you will see this.

My guess would be, yes, sort of. Not new engines, but it looks like some sort of hush kit, similar to those retrofitted to the 727.
Having the same engines (727/737) would lead me to believe that.
Although, these do like quite different than those on a 727. Maybe from a different manufacturer.

My glass is neither 1/2 empty nor 1/2 full, rather, the glass itself is twice as big as it should be.

Those are Hushkitted Engines. The T/Rs are mounted behind it.
Regarding the Question posed by the Photographer:- Its Normal for the Outboard Slats to extend slightly more than the rest.
