Hi,

Unfortunately, ex-MyTravel DC-10 G-BYDA (She was well known on the Forums!) is currently in the Process of being Scrapped at Kemble.

A massive shame in my eyes, I thought she would make it to another stage in her life  Sad

I thought a DC-10-30 would have been attractive for Cargo conversation more than the DC-10-10's which I think are still operating.

Shame anyway.

Just wondering, when they scrap the aircraft would I be able to purchase any parts they may have, or obtain them..seeing as the aircraft wont be used again anyway, am I able to do this or will the parts be used for other aircraft.
Im only after something small anyway, nothing "major" in size.

A good question, best to e-mail them on the Kemble Website (google search will fish it out). I would be interested in a piece of this Aviation History as well.

Better act fast though, I cant see G-BYDA being around for much longer!  Sad

I think I will get in-touch.

If this is THE SINGLE famous MyTravel DC-10, then it became famous here in Denmark some 4 or 5 years ago. The fame came from a trip from Miami to Copenhagen which took almost a week.

Day after day it was headline news how far it had made it after a short jump until it again went broke.

Danish journalists flew out on scheduled airliners, met the waiting passengers and interviewed them about their mood. While the passengers became fewer and fewer as more and more passengers became desparate, pulled out their credit card and bought an ordinary one way ticket back home.

When they finally arrived at destination there was an even larger welcome committee which included the local CAA authorities who were very interested in the resons for this most dramatic pond crossing.

Before that event it was pretty well known in Swedish newspapers. The ARN (Stockholm) ATC controllers had gone to the press and told that over and over again they had been nice to this DC-10 when arriving from the Canary Islands to ARN asking for "priority landing" due to "pain in the petrol". The controllers said that in the future they would only accept a May Day call.

It was before the name MyTravel was invented. But certainly it was (one of) the reasons for inventing a new name. Without a name change they could just as well have closed down completely, at least in Scandinavia.

With the authorities blowing them heavily on their back following those incidents, and with the present modern Airbus equipment I'm sure they are true professionals today.

Always keep your number of landings equal to your number of take-offs, Preben Norholm

A shame that G-BYDA has gone and the plan for it to remain active elsewhere never came to fruition, as it was the only DC-10 I ever flew from MAN-SFB. Looks like its gone for good from that picture.

Here's a short video of her last flight, with some cool music added for the occasion.  Smile
