YKA is undergoing a runway expansion to exceed 8000' over the next year or 2, with a possibility to a final 9000' .
The cost will be approximately $16million CAD, which includes expansion to terminal building to include an International arrivals and customs area. The extension is expected to proceed west on RWY 08 end by approximately 2000', but will be determined after an environmental study can be completed.

WS has had their eye on YKA for some time, however, WS draw from YKA'S passenger basin makes up approx 20% of YLW'S traffic and approx 15% of their traffic ex YXS, so they are crunching numbers on when and how many flights they should look at starting. Another is the complex approach procedures for YKA during inclement WXX. Apparently AC has an approved approach for down to 1/2mile at 462' before initiating a missed approach, however most other aircraft are 3/4mile at 1020ft (not sure on exact height), so WS has to look at getting a realtively similar approach plate as AC has, but difficult with the step down procedures and distances involved when flying a 737 vs DH8...
NAVCAN was here with their Challenger today doing approaches..so who knows...something to come soon???
