Perhaps equivalent to PMI in Europe? or is HNL bigger?

Many of those flying to FLL are going on cruises. FLL is seeing large traffic increases lately, in part due to cruise passengers I have read. FLL is becoming congested.
I think that LAS, HNL and MCO are bigger holiday (vacation) destinations.

The South Florida (MIA-FLL-PBI) metro area is not only a major holiday destination, but also has a huge number of second homes for Northeasterners (mainly NY/NJ). Hawaii is a huge tourist destination, but South Florida is so much more convenient, and I would say many visit it more than once a year.

An unexamined life isn't worth living.

FLL is a good option for residents of South Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach) specially for its LCC carriers and its central location, 30 minutes to Miami and 30 minutes to West Palm Beach. It is also increasing its International Flights. For example, AVIANCA has a daily flight from FLL to BOG and is doing very well.

I agree with CitationJet that is getting a little bit congested, specially on the domestic part of the airport.

I prefer flying to FLL than to MIA anytime, specially coming from abroad, because there are no immigration lines and people is friendlier.

I miss ACES & I am proud of AVIANCA

Quoting RICARIZA (Reply 3):
because there are no immigration lines

Clearly you have not flown to FLL in the past four months. The lines are ridiculously long.
