It is amazing! I never would have thought this would work, but it did!
After flying two transatlantic round trips on Icelandair within a year, I noticed that I had flown on pretty much all of their 757 aircraft except four! Naturally I hoped that I would be flying on one or two of the missing ones. After doing some research, I knew I wouldn't be flying on 2 of the 4, since one of them is a -300 and thay don't use them on FRA or JFK legs, and the other one is a Y class only cabin, so this one wouldn't be flying either. So this left me to hope for TF-FIP "Leifur Eiríksson" and TF-FIO "Valdis"!
First I thought I might write them an email to ask which plane was scheduled, but this wouldn't have changed anything really, what difference did it make to know the reg# three days before or at the airport.
So I decided to ask for that specific plane to be scheduled! I dug up all kinds of email ad's on their website (sales, reservations, ff program...) and hoped one of them could forward my message to scheduling or operations. This was 10 days before the flight. Here's what I wrote:

I have enjoyed flying across the Atlantic on Icelandair a couple of times in the last year, on 6 different 757 aircraft on New York - KEF - Frankfurt routes. Once I have even stopped in Iceland to visit this beautiful country for a week.
I have a question: I am an aviation enthusiast, and I think it is very interesting that with only two round-trip flights from Europe to North America, you can almost fly with the entire Icelandair Fleet! The next time I will be flying FRA-KEF-JFK on June 2, on your flights 521 and 615.
Until today, I have flown on all your 757 aircraft except TF-FIJ, TF-FIK, and TF-FIO.
Is there any chance I might be flying with one of these airplanes next week? If not, and if it doesn't make any operational difference, would there be any chance to schedule one or two of them for my flights?

OK so I sent this, and I didn't expect anything to happen really. But then, less that 24 hours later, I received this email from Scheduling:
Dear Mr Kupke!
I have scheduled TF-FIJ to operate the Frankfurt-Keflavik flight on the 02 June and then I have scheduled TF-FIO to operate Keflavik-New York 02 June, but unfortunately we can not promise that this is going to stay like that. We do move our flights from one aircraft to another according to bookings and arrival times, And because Frankfurt is one of our first flights from Keflavik in the morning we will have to use one of the first aircraft's to arrive so we do not have any delays.
We will probable not be using TF-FIK on those routes that day because of the bookings, TF-FIK has a different interior and fewer seats.
To make things perfect, I was given a business class ticket at check-in... With the remark "UPG FQTV" printed on it, even though I had just joined the ff club 2 weeks before!
What a great experience, and how lovely to see that small airlines can be REALLY flexible to their customer's demands, even if they are completely crazy! Way to go Icelandair!

That is pretty remarkable. Although as you say they are a small airline...so that small size probably made it easier for them to accomidate your request. I'm sure the upgrade was a nice thing for them to throw in as well.

I wish I was as lucky as you... last year I wrote AA Ops to try and get the reg of the 772 I took on GIG-GRU-JFK and they said they couldn't disclose the reg for "security reasons". Yeah, right...

We need a new thread for the most outrageous thing an airline claimed was a security issue. Has anyone yet been told they can't have the whole can of Coke for security reasons?
Birdwatching -- I have to agree, this is truly impressive. Given the scheduling issues of total hours for both airframes and engines, etc. -- plus the fact that this actually *could* have been a security issue! -- I would never have believed they'd do anything like this. (I guess it's possible you were just lucky with what they had scheduled and were pulling your leg, but it's a lot more fun to ignore that!) Nice way to get an upgrade, too.

My dad did that once with Air Canada, he wanted to fly on fin 264, the one painted in TCA Colours, so he phoned Ops and they put a note on it and said he would try to schedule it and it was scheduled on the flight. of course he woirks for AC, that is why he had the number, but even AC has done it.

wow! yeah, thats really good. i might ask ask BMIbaby to do that in future i have so far only flown on one doubler, which i am told is now leaving the fleet anyway. In the last year i have flown:

Wow, that's pretty amazing. Good job Icelandair! I had a pretty average experience flying with them, although they did let us change seats from the ones we were sitting in because we had the seat next to the door (not a very nice place, right next to the lavatories/bulkhead too).
