A little question: I just bought a return ticket LIS-GIG, and on the way there I have to change flights in GRU, so it's outbound LIS-XGRU-GIG and return GIG-LIS non-stop. Actually, I would like to get out already at GRU and travel overland, so ask for my luggage to be offloaded at GRU. Will they cancel my return trip for this, you think?

Any advice/experiences very much appreciated.

lol, You paid for the ticket, just inform them to avoid that they cancel your return due to noshow. It even saves them fuel and food.....

I have a quite similar situation, bought a MIA-GRU-GIG flight but at time of check-in i just ask to end the travel on GRU, so my boarding pass was issued to GRU. I have received my FF points with no problems.
Just talk at time of check-in that you gone stay at GRU without connection to GIG.

Rgds,
Felipe

Thanks Felipe,

It seems fine then. But was your trip Brasil-Miami-Brasil or the other way around?

I've seen RG - and other airlines - cancel segments because of just this, and that was regardless of being informed or not: I wouldn't do it.

Yes, you've paid for the ticket, but that doesn't change the computer programming that RG's revenue controll system has: a noshow will lead to a cancellation.

There are ways around it, but they are a bit of a grey area - then again, I've seen airlines change tickets around in so many ways that, if I (as travel agent) had done it, would have cost me thousands in penalties, so I guess they just might do it: in any case, I recommend you write down at least the name of the person telling you it's ok, and - personally - I'd also try to get someone like a station manager (or something similar) to confirm this.

It wasn't RG (but in fact BA), but we've just had one extremely bad experience with one of our customers: on the flight from Germany to London he started feeling ill, so he asked an agent in London if he could postpone his round-the-world trip by a month - he'd just buy a separate ticket from London back to Germany, as well as one when he was planning to continue his trip: the agent told him that that was no problem, but he should simply use the London-Germany coupon at the end of his ticket for his return to Germany, so he wouldn't have to pay anything. Needless to say, when he tried to rebook his flight about a month later (something that, according to the fare rules, would have been completely permissable) BA told him that he hadn't used his flight coupons in the right order, so his ticket was void.

Had he done what he himself had at first wanted to do, he would not have encountered any problems...

I know it does not directly mirror the decision you're facing, I'm just saying that you should get people with somewhat relevant authority to actually confirm that what you're doing won't get you into trouble.

In any case - enjoy your flight... skipped segment or not...

Regards,
Frank

Was Brasil-Miami-Brasil.
I agree with Frank, despite the info given here, the best is talking to RG. They even may change actions from time to time.

Felipe

Frank and Felipe,

Thanks for the info. I'll have a chat with Varig here in LIS and see. the higher authority the better, and if it all doesn't work out I'll fly to Rio. No worries.

Thanks for the feedback!
