I found a NW sched last night stuck inside a book. 1-8-84, NW had 35 departures from DTW non-stop to 11 cities, NYC-EWR included as one city with one 747 to JFK and 4 trips to EWR which includes a DC-10. Other destinations include MSP MKE ORD(only one flight from DTW) TPA GRR PIT CLE DCA BOS and PHL.
At that time, I would say Republic was the big dog at DTW.

I would check the AA & UA schedules for the time too.

You'll find AA and UA had many more non-stops from DTW.

According to TWA's February 1, 1984 timetable:

DTW 5 dailies: 1x JFK (arr 412p, for int'l flights)
4x STL (incl 2x L1011's)

According to Republic's October 28, 1984 timetable:

DTW 144 dailies: sorry, no time to break them down! Highlights:
--started service to six cities: BUF, ROC, BDL FWA, OKC, SBN.
--8x daily to ORD, 6x daily to MSP, 8x daily to MKE, 7x daily to BOS.

According to Empire Airlines December 15, 1984 timetable: 2x daily SYR

NWA was fairly large at Tampa, MSP, Milwaukee, Chicago and Seattle before the Republic merger. In fact, Northwest flew the Chicago-Florida routes that US did not in 1984. AA did not serve a single florida airport from O'Hare. Delta and Eastern also had several flights from Florida to Detroit and Chicago. I remember flying Delta nonstop from Fort Lauderdale to Detroit as late as 1990, believe it or not, after Northwest was well established with a Detroit hub.

In October 1984, Republic didn't serve PVD. The only New England airports they served were BOS and BDL. I don't have any 1985 or 1986 RC timetables, though, they might have served PVD at some point then.

Republic opened their hub in 84, so yes they were the big guys, for a short period of time.

I am not sure who went where, but I dont think Republic officially established itself as a hub at DTW until later in 1984 and that just lasted two years when Northwest took over.

I remember seeing the blue goose for quite a white at DTW before that dull white scheme came out.

In the 1980s, I recall seeing these "unusual" airplanes at DTW

MD-11: I actually flew on it as a sub, must have been the only one ever to land there in 1993
DC-8-70: throughout the 80s
seen pics of a DL 747 at DTW in the 70s

1993 Lufthansa German Airlines initiated non-stop service to Frankfurt in May, but terminated service one year later as they signed a joint marketing agreement with United Airlines to fly out of Chicago ’s O’Hare Airport.

Prior to this they were there only Condor was actually operating the flights as LH or for them, this lasted for a while though.

UA used to have a reservations center in Rocky River, OH. Back in the 1980s, CLE used to operate n/s flights to LAX and SFO. They also had 762 and DC-10 widebody service to ORD. I also flew n/s to FLL once on a three-holer from CLE. US also had a substantial 'mini-hub' at CLE before CO moved in.

Good work there, Stirling. That's a lot of info. There's a lot a news there from everyone who posted. Thanks and here's more facts relating to post #1.
NW DTW 1-8-84 departures....

BOS three
ORD one
CLE one
GRR two
MKE five
MSP five including one 747 and one DC10
EWR/JFK five (see post one for more info)
PHL four
PIT two
TPA one
DCA six
I can conclude that most flights thru DTW at that time were with 727-100 and 200's.
NW had sold off their 36 707's by 1977.
The 720B's were also sold in the 70's.
