East side near the UN. 5 people on board. They look to be ok. The helicopter is under the water and the divers are going in now.

WNBC-TV reporting eight passengers on board - three rescued from the East River, as many as five unaccounted for... divers searching crash area in river between 34th and 42nd Streets. No details on chopper owner, etc.

They're saying it's a S-76, 8 pulled out so far. How many can it carry?

Regardless of the number of passengers on board, I hope they are all fine.

At the bus station, buses stop. At the train station, trains stop. At my desk, I have a work station.

On New York One: Police commissioner says all 6 passengers and 2 pilots (8 total) pulled from East River and basically fine. Chief of EMS in NYC says a brand-new report that one pilot may be suffering "salt water drowning", a condition that materializes within 24 hours of getting salt in the lungs. Considered life-threatening, but treatable.

Conditions here pretty normal.

Fortunately, NY1 at least is calming the media hysteria (OMG! 2 in a week!!!)with expert saying that this is a fluke and nothing systemic. (which is of course true).

Copter owned by MBNA Bank, came in at 4:30 to 34th st heliport, departed at 4:38, started to climb then hit the water and broke apart about 500 feet north of the airport as it started up the river. An employee of FreshDirect jumped into the water to help rescue passengers, then, despite the police asking him to hang around and take some media adulation, said "I gotta go to work" and took off. Typical New Yorker.

From the pictures in the newspapers, it seems the chopper at 6N5 might have been this one:

seen here at JRB. N317MX.

However the helicopter is broken up through the registration number, and there is an N317MY as well.

Anyone know for sure?

According to one eye witness account he stated that there was black smoke coming from the engine. Now does that mean both engines failed or just one of them ? If only one of the engines failed the pilot should have been able to turn around and land. The S-76 can land with one engine out unless something else happened along with the engine failure.

Airplanes are only as good as the people who fly&fix them.
