New UA Terminal @ JFK?

Last year I read in a WSJ article that despite United's Financial troubles, that they would still keep up their pledge for a new terminal @ JFK. UA's current JFK terminal brings me back to the 1970's with almost nothing electronically displayed and even old flight monitors. Does anybody know if that is still true and if so, when it might begin construction??? Thanks in advance.

I don't know which terminal you are speaking of. They have operated from the award winning British Airways Terminal 7 for over a decade now. Full modernization was completed at least three years ago.
The terminal features extra large/long lounge chairs, flat screen tv monitors, duty-free shops, fountains, and lots of glass.

The new terminal to be built by UAL will be built by JetBlue. They need the space and sad for UAL--they don't.

United, as said, has been at Terminal 7 for a while now. Terminal 7 has very modern equipment.

Airlines at Terminal 7 are:

Air Canada
United
British Airways
Iberia
Cathay Pacific
ANA
Icelandair
Qantas

You must be kidding. I go through JFK T7 on UA several times a month - always crowded, ridiculous lines at security, small and cramped gates... what award are we talking about?

Rather, UA could make a bid for TWA's old terminal as a frontispice, and build new gates behind...

That's strange, I'm a "groaner" when it comes to airport terminals and experienced the opposite of what you are describing at T7. Try Delta's T3 - they could do with some renovations.

I would be surprised if UA built a new terminal at JFK. They currently do not use all the space they lease in the BA terminal.

BA would love to be able to recover some of the unused UA counters but UA won't budge, so, as long as they pay the rent it's theirs!

UA had it's own terminal at JFK for over 30 years. Why did they move out anyway?

BA and UA had a shortlived 'relationship' and it was during this time UA moved over to T7. The relationship soured but the lease remains! This must've been in the very late '80's if memory serves me correctly.

UA has two gates at an intermediate level between the other gates and baggage claim. They aren't as spacious as the other 10 gates (although they've got the comfy chairs). This may explain the differing opinions. Even considering gates 11 and 12, it's still my personal favorite terminal anywhere!

Every time I've used T7 at JFK, I've been very impressed with it. It certainly beats any of the terminals at Heathrow hands down.

BA use gates 1-6 and UA use gates 7-12. The BA gates are used by all carriers except UA, and I think AC. BA would like to expand and use some of the UA gates when the BA ops are busy and UA quiet but the computer equipment isn't compatible.

Off topic but does anyone know if Iberia and Cathay Pacfic as well as Qantas use BA gates 1-6?

And also I thought America West used gates 1-3? And maybe 4 since they took over Concorde gate.

I assume that as One World Alliance members, Iberia, Cathay and Qantas use BAs gates and Star Alliance members Air Canada and ANA use United's gates.

Which gates do Icelandair use?

ANA actually uses BA for its ground services, and it actually always uses gate at BA side (5/6) -- the same as CX. Iberia also uses BA's ground and uses gates over at BA side. For UA's side, only AC and UA use that gates, but sometimes when there is a lengthy delay, BA will use some of the gates over at UA side. I once saw a QF 744 at gate 8/9. For UA, with expansion on p.s., the UA side is getting busier.

Terminal seven is actually quite nice and my only complaint is that it can use a few more food outlets.

Visually, Terminal 7 has to be one of the nicest facilities to be in, specifically in the check in lobby. The height (or lack thereof) on the concourse level itself leaves much to be desired.

I usually do at least one p.s. trip through there each month and have yet to wait in line at security for more than two minutes. Are there actually long waits for security?

Yes, it does look nice but there are it's bad points. Security for me was very fast. I like the waterfall with the changing colors. They whole terminal looks very nice with all the screens and colors. The gate area for me was very nice. I remember I went out of Gate 10 (2 years ago to LHR). There were comfy seats, restaurants and shops. I liked it, and coming back was ok, it was just a long white hallway, white walls, ceiling, and floor and then the customs booth.

You must travel at very busy times because I went during a busy time and it was still very spacious. I guess it must have changed but I don't think it was that bad. I agree with JFKLGANYC it is what he said.

Random question, but I assume BA has it's own maintaince team at JFK? Are these people employees of British Airways or is it outsourced? Also, do Iberia, CX, etc use these BA employees?

FI, IB, NH, QF, CX use BA for passenger handling. HP uses their own staff for passenger handling. All these airlines use the BA gates. In addition to BA handling NH check-in, NH also provides translators.

BA's engineering staff at JFK are BA employees. I don't know who does the maintenance/engineering on CX and IB.

I like the UA terminal area at JFK. There's a Peet's Coffee & Tea there which surprised me since they don't have locations in NYC.

So BA has foreign language speakers for the IB and CX flights?

BA's engineering staff at JFK are BA employees

And I assume they are all local Americans?

25 Jetblue15 : They use gates 1 or 2. I don't see UA going to a new terminal. They should worry about getting out of chapter 11. Anyway, why do they need a new term
