Just wondering why the bloody governemnt is delaying the T4 and the new runways?? They should have been operational quite a while ago, no??!! I have read that there are pathetic problems about how passengers are going to connect from the T4 to the Old Barajas (Avion Revue) plus the well known debates between Iberia and Spanair about space allocation in the new terminals (or should I say non space allocation in the case of Spanair). Also I was wondering what is planned for the Old Barajas (I know it will be operational for Star Alliance and some others but are they planning to face-lift-it or something like that??) Otherwise the differnce between terminals is going to be shamefull (21st century vs 1970's)?! And what about the long term project of a whole new airport at Campo Real? Any news or thoughts? Will it mean the end of Barajas when it becomes a reality in about 20 years?

First of all, I think that saying that the current terminals look "1970's" is just "going too far". Remember that T3 was opened in 1997 and T1's south pier was opened around 1999.
As for the rest of T1, yes...it was opened in 1977 but it was last updated during the mid-90s, when new interior ceilings/lighting, wall covers, information screens, check-in counters and restroom facilities were installed (although many of those restrooms don´t look in good shape anymore).
Arrivals halls 1 and 2 were also completely remodelled, with a new interior layout, new appearance and new/additional baggage belts.
Same goes for Terminal 2. The same improvements as in T1, and arrivals halls 4, 5 and 6 completely remodelled.
It's true that T2's interior layout can be a real pain for passengers at peak hours, mostly for those pax transitting between terminals (narrow corridors full of people and a complex distribution that can make people get lost easily) but we must have in mind that it was not designed for the amount of traffic it handles currently. But about it's "aesthetic condition", I would say that it looks even better than T1.
A new building was also built in 1995-1996 to host Aena's offices and to make the transfer area between T1 and T2 much more spacious and modern.
Yes, T1 and T2 may not be "sate-of-the-art", but they look decent enough for me...much better than many of today's other big airports. T3 is very good, as well as T1's south pier.
Now to answer your question about the facelift, I've heard that some improvements will be made...basically preparing both T2 and T3 to handle widebody jets (increasing distance between gates/jetways) as well as replacing the older jetways. The "general appearance" of the most transitted areas will see some changes too, but that won't happen immediately.
Finally, about the transportation between the old and new terminals..you know...Spain is not "an example to follow" when it comes to adequate planning of things. The final decision on transportation between both terminal areas will depend on the result of the "dogfight" between PP and PSOE...they keep passing the ball to the other when asked about who's going to pay for the pending infrastructures...the government of the "Comunidad de Madrid" (PP) or the central government (PSOE) through the "Ministerio de Fomento" which is 100% responsible for Aena's operations. And while this happens, the new terminals will look old by the time they are finally opened...they were finished almost 2 years ago and are still waiting to be equipped since then.
Ahhhhhh España...it's always the same.
P.S. Check out the following link. It's about Italy but it can also be 100% applied to Spain...I almost pi$$ed my pants after laughing like crazy when I saw it the first time...it's hilarious...and yes...Spain is like that.

What you say is very true, i was a bit critical with the 1970's statement as the new T1 pier and the T3 are good, adequate and modern buildings. It is sad to see how politicians always manage to place their interests first and spoil the cake for the general public.... shamefull. Anyhow, the link you gave me is HILARIOUS absolutely true and applicable to Spain, really funny stuff....

The new runways have been used a couple of times this last month due to some mainteinance works in the old terminals. The 4 runways will not be used at the same time until the new terminals will be opened (that means in February 2006, if there isn't more delays).
