Apologies if this has come up elsewhere but there have been too many 787 (and indeed CO787 and NW787) threads to search.
Am I correct in recalling that there exist strong links between CO and NW? If so, has there been any discussion about coordinating their requirement for 787s? Might they, for example, choose the same engine?

You make a good point. Yes, CO and NW have a very strong relationship, however, the two carriers have not, in recent history, had very similar fleets so this was never much of an issue. You'll recall some similarities between the two fleets in the past decades such as DC-10's, classic 747's, DC-9's and 727-200's. Now, however, the Airbus/MCD fleet at NW contrasts sharply with the Boeing fleet at CO. NW's 757's have different engines that those at CO, too.

You might well see future cooperation between them on the 787, in particular maintenance, training and overhaul. The 787 will be very different from what has been used in the past and the two could pool their requirements for facilities needed to maintain the composite structures.
I could also foresee both operators sharing engine facilities as well if the GENx is selected (NW isn't a Rolls customer, CO only uses Rolls on the 752 so that points to the GEnx for them) but it's the aircraft structures where cooperation would be beneficial due to the changes.

If NW and the 787 had any simularities it would be with KLM, their business class (though slightly different look) and new coach is the exact same as the NW product. If AF/KL bought the 787 look for at least the KL side to be the same as NW.
