B6 Tells SYR To Lower Fees Or Risk 190 Expansion

Running three flights per day to JFK at 85% load factors is still not enough for Jetblue as expansion stagnates in SYR. They want the passenger costs in line with ROC and Burlington. SYR recently raised their landing costs close to $3. from $1.71, and then lowered them nominally to appease a recent Neeleman tirade. Still the passenger costs are about $2. per pax higher in SYR.

It's hard to believe SYR can't compete with ROC costwise. Afterall, I believe ROC has spent larger sums in airport terminal construction and infrastructure.

Interesting is this passage from the article:

"JetBlue operates three daily flights from Syracuse to Kennedy Airport in New York City using 156-seat Airbus A320's.

Barger said the carrier will continue to operate those flights using the A320 but would like to add direct flights to cities such as Boston and Florida destinations such as Orlando using the new plane."

This counters rumors by some members who feel B6 will replace the 320s with the E-190 to use the 320s "on more profitable" routes.

Well in order to more effectively compete he will eventually have to move to the EMB on those flights. Once he dilutes the revenue by adding new direct service to some of his more popular connecting markets it wont have much of a choice.

It's also interesting that the journalist, Rick Moriarty, made the mistake of calling the E-190 a regional jet! People just don't seem to be able to understand that they're mainline!

I'm confused. Lower airline fees=more flights=more airport revenue (parking, concessions) Its a no-brainer to me, am I missing something?

Listen Betty, don't start up with your 'White Zone' s*** again.

Well, it's all about balance. Airlines could also sell all their seats for $20. Their flights would be full, but they'd still be losing money.

I don't exactly know why SYR is supposedly more expensive to run than the other airports up there... Maybe because it's run by the city?
