Etihad In Talks For 777 Freighter

Abu-Dhabi based Etihad Airways is in talks with Boeing to purchase the freight version of the long-range 777 airliner, an official said in remarks published on Thursday.

"We are definitely interested in the cargo version of the Boeing 777-200LR. We have initiated talks and right now we are looking at the numbers," Werner Borchert, vice-president of operations at Etihad, told the English-language daily Gulf News.

"Etihad is also interested in the 777-200LR passenger version because we have plans to launch non-stop routes and we are looking into it but it is too early to say anything more," he added.

Last year, state-owned Etihad signed a USD$1.09 billion deal with Boeing for five wide-bodied 777-300ER planes and a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to acquire up to 36 planes worth as much as USD$7 billion.

Borchert told the newspaper that with the delivery of the five Boeing aircraft between October and December 2005, the airline would have a fleet of 14 aircraft.

Etihad, launched in 2003, is one of several fast-growing airlines in the Gulf, where big state budgets and a desire to boost tourism to the region have led to a surge in demand for new aircraft.

I concur and in the case of the 772LR PAX version I'd use the 773ER order and delivery schedule as an indicator that they'll be pushing for early delivery slots.

Oh how I cannot wait to see more 777's flying in the sky! I was at the Museum of Flight at BFI 9 days ago when the 777-240/LR came back from Paris. I was headed to my car and looked at the aircraft on final and saw the giant heading in and what a site to see and hear. The engines have such a deep, quiet, yet utterly powerful noise. Can't wait to spot more in the air! Good days ahead for aviation, I can tell  Wink !

I am unsure how many they will end up with but this is certainly good news if true. Looks like the 200F is going to take off.

Since we have not seen a cancellation of the A-340 order, we can only presume both up until such a cancellation (if it ever happens) is announced.

It would be nice to see them operating both the A345 and 777-200LR side by side but it just doesn't make sense to me to operate two equal aircraft side by side. But like I said, it would be great if they operate them side by side Big grin

Perhaps they plan on only purchasing the 777F for right now; that would make more sense.
