MAD New T4

Hello to all!

MADs new T4 will double the pax capacity of the airport from roughly 35M to 75M pax/year.

I would like to know who will absorb this increase. Are there new flights planned to/from MAD? Any airlines from Asia? T4 will be operated by IB, BA and other Oneworld members. Will CX have a direct flight? Will AA increase routes?

Any information will be very much appreciated.
Thanks. EUROBUS.

Hi Eurobus.

As I'm no longer based in Madrid, any idea when T4 will eventually open? I can't wait to use it. Is it still true that it'll be Iberia and One World airlines using it?

Hi Toulouse,

T4 is completely finished and currently the bidding for the commercial premises is taking place. I hope that it will be operating by the end of the year but, who knows, it might be later! Sad

According to all news, it is now definite: IB and Oneworld will be operating from T4 and T4-S while UX and Skyteam will be based in T2 and T3, and JK and Star Alliance at T1.

I must say, it is looking great from outside. I hope it is up and running soon!

I was connecting several times trough Barajas to South America lately. I think the vast majority of it's new capacity it will absorb itself. I felt always in a real mess in the old terminal. Actually having a choice I would connect trough any other airport until the new terminal is open. I think it is good for MAD to get a new infrastructure, also representing the new Spain. Barajas in it's actual shape does not really honor the Spain I love  Wink

MAD will absorb more traffic with South America, for sure. And more with the rest of Europe as well.

But what about USA? Currently there are only a few flights with DL, CO, US, AA and IB. Nothing to the West Coast. Would DFW, LAX or SFO be interesting?

What about the Middle East? Don't you thing MAD could be of interest to EK, GF or QR being the main port of entry for the flights coming from South America?

And Asia? I believe SQ no longer operates from MAD, but business and tourism are increasing between Spain and the Far East, especially China, where recently UX started flying. Any news of other airlines interested?

Not quite the figures available on aena.es. Currently MAD is handling about 25M pax. New terminal will allow MAD to cope with 70M. However no estimated target date is set for these figures. I could only find an estimation for 50M pax at horizon 2010.

EUROBUS: QR is planning flights to Madrid, but has not received the slots it requested, apparently. Staff is being recruited and hopefully MAD operations will be up and running soon.

Hi

MAD T4 will be very welcome.
MAD is usually very busy (I have been there 5 times already) and very disorganized some times...
Also anyone smokes wherever they want.
Hope to see the new terminal soon!

Cheers

US Airways has a flight to LAX but you have to connect in PHL first.

As far as I no the only two asian carriers are Thai and Korean although Air Plus Comet and Air Europa will start flights to Asia, Air Europa has already.
It would be intreseting to see if Cathay Pacific starts a daily flight from HKG,
I would think there is a market.

There has already been a topic disscussed about whether or not EK or GF should start MAD flights. And I think the verdict was no.

Also I believe that Terminal 4 is sopposed to open on January 29, 2006.

Currently from Madrid destinations served in the US, directly, are:

Atlanta - Atlanta
Miami - American and Iberia
Philidelphia - US Airways
New York - Iberia, Continental/Air Europa, Delta, Air Plus Comet
Chicago - Iberia

I don´t know if frequencies will increase, maybe a second Continental flight.

That is not correct. MAD handled 38,5 million pax in 2004 and will handle more than 40 million this year...it's Europe's 5th busiest airport.

The 70 million pax mark was expected to be reached by the year 2025 when the new terminals were just being designed...now, if the traffic growth rate continues at it's current level the 70 million mark could be reached before 2020.

I also think this answers EUROBUS' question...the 70M won't be reached within a year or two...it's a long term project, but the infrastructures are ready from now.

Thanks to all for your comments!

Yes, I guess MAD won`t reach 70M pax over night  Wink , but considering the saturation there is in Barajas at this time, there are bound to be airlines -like QR- that after applying cannot get a slot. Am I correct?

Also, my main desire is to see, not only the 5th largest European airport expand -like IBERIA747 has said- but also see it better connected to the world, especially Asia!

What about flights to Canada?

IB used to fly to YUL and YYZ but they stopped both services (10 years ago or something).
AC was flying to YYZ but the also stopped the service last year.

Maybe there is no demand enough to have a non-stop flight during winter season but in the summer I am sure there is demand enough to have up to 2 daily flights MAD-Canada. I know this summer Air Plus Comet will fly some charter flights between MAD and Quebec-Toronto but I haven't seen any regular service.

I can't even imagine how MAD will be able to handle 70M pax if in not a critical day, as yesterday, there were so many delays...

It is not acceptable

Agur,

Two new runways...

At 1430, change to south configuration, and at 1600 winds of up to 30 kt and thunderstorms that reduce the number of operations per hour. All this in a summer day. Well, it all depends on what your definition of "critical" is, but it was pretty awful for all of us who were there.

Do you know when are the 2 new runways going to be in operation?

Que gusto que Barajas esté teniendo tal desarrollo.

Quick question. With Skyteam scheduled to move into T2, what is going to happen for immigration and customs for DL and CO? Does T2 currently have those facilities or will they have renovate the terminal to handle international flights?

OTOH, I am happy with the progress Barajas has made in their expansion project and I look forward to seeing T4 up and running soon.

Good question. Sky Team companies like CO, DL, KE or AM would need some customs and immigrations and I don't think T2 have them (specially immigration). I know that old terminals T2 and the old part or T1 are going to have some improvements soon, I think a new immigration area should be done but I haven't heard anything about.
