Starting Dec 1, 2005, CX will add CX 256/257 HKG - LHR daily.
Departs from HKG @ 0900 and arrives same day @ 1450 in LHR.
Departs from LHR @ 2115 and arrives next day @ 1730 in HKG.

A34C will be used.
With this additional service, CX will offer passengers the choice of flights throughout the day ex-HKG with morning, mid-afternoon, and 2 midnight departures.

Will it be A340s or 747-400s?

Isn't it going to be a little "overdoing it" to have flights so close together in the evening, particularly the 21.15 and 22.35 departures from LHR?

Here's the press release.

Four times a day to LHR from Dec. 1 onwards & they already serve SYD thrice daily. Excellent connectivity.

We can expect CX to serve SYD four times a day next year.

Will the A340 be a 300 or 600. I'm guessing its a -300, but a -600 would be brilliant!

BTW The link doesn't work.

The 0900 departure ex HKG will connect well with the overnight service from SYD, which arrives around 0600 to HKG.

I do not think CX will increase SYD services beyond 3 per day. If anything, they will bring back A346 and B744 equipment to increase capacity. They have a nice SYD schedule, with services every 6 hrs, and given the curfew, this will suffice.

If anything, CX will add a third MEL service, going head to head with QF's overnight service, which does quite well out of MEL. These services would also provide onward connections to the 4th daily HKG-LHR service.

My guess on timings would be
HKG 09.45
MEL 21.45
MEL 23.55
HKG 06.55+1

Looks like there is more coming at CX, including nonstops to Dubai, over and above the existing one stop at BKK services. Whoever is CX mad should look at all of their schedules...

Cathay are adding as many new flights as they can.... if they had more crew there would be even more as so many flights are full.

I already stated in my initial post that the new flights will be operated by the A34C aka 3-class A340-300.
