IB Use The 747-400 On Flights?

Why do IB use the 747-400 on domestic flights to the canaries? I know it must be a busy route but surely they would be better using the A300-600R or maybe the A330, or, is it because the 747's are used on the LPA flights inbetween the long haul runs,thus utilising an aircraft that would otherwise be sat idle at MAD?

Iberia uses its very large aircraft for certain flights out of Madrid to the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria and Tenerife) simply to accommodate the huge amount of demand between Madrid and those destinations - there is big O&D demand as well as a lot of connecting traffic thru MAD going to/from the Canaries. Iberia simply uses the largest aircraft it has available - it is not uncommon to see A343s, A346s and/or 747s do a Madrid-Canaries turn.

Which type of aircraft flies the routes at any given moment is simply a scheduling matter - for example, if a 744 arrives in Madrid from a longhaul destination at 800AM, and is not scheduled for another longhaul flight until 2300 (say a flight to South America, for example), IB will send the 744 from Madrid to Tenerife on a mid-morning flight and it will be back in Madrid by early evening to fly the longhaul segment.

When IB flew a fleet of A300s for high-demand domestic/European routes, the A300s were flequently used on the Canaries flights, as those routes were one of the few that could support the larger aircraft. As IB moved more to a hub system at MAD (and BCN), frequencies were increased on many routes and smaller A32X sized aircraft made more sense....to balance the loss of the large shorter-haul A300s, IB uses other widebody equipment on the Canary Routes (and also has increased frequency, during high demand periods, there can be up to ten departures out of Madrid each day to both Gran Canaria and Tenerife operating with everything from M88s to 744s....and trust me, the flights are filled to capacity.)

That and the amount of cargo a 747 can carry.

None of the B747-400 combines long haul routes with flights to the Canaries. One of them flies IB6621-IB6622 MAD-HAV-MAD and the other one IB0952-IB0959-IB0958-IB0951 MAD-TFN-MAD-TFN-MAD. They have the same schedule every day.

Only flights to LPA (IB0802 in the morning and IB0808 in the evening) are operated with A340s that, otherwise, would be sitting idle at MAD. Also some days one of these A343 flies the shuttle MAD-BCN departing at 1715 from MAD and at 1915 from BCN.

When Iberia announced to retire their A300 which they mostly used to the Canaries, they also flew there with A340, and ocasionally with 747: but I thought they were going to substitute the A300 with A330, given the compatibility with the 340, and also given the supposed (by me, at least) best economics of the twins for short-medium haul routes. Through the years it has resulted that in Iberia they didn't think the same, since they have bought many other planes but not that one. Some months ago, an Iberia 340 crew and a.net member ,("Icaro"), said that he was told that Iberia had recently bought 6 new A330 for these routes, but I have never seen anything else about it. Now that this thread has been posted, does anyone here know anything about this?

There was a rumor going around at one time that IB had purchased the A330, I also heard six airframes, but I do not think that these aircraft were ever intended for the routes from Madrid to the Canaries - the rumor I heard was that the A330s were to be used for transatlantic services, freeing up the A340s for longer segments and expansion. The rumor was vague - there was no mention of whether IB was interested in the A332 or A333. The A330 order never materialized and IB has since moved along to an A343/346 fleet for long haul.

If IB got the A330s, no doubt that these aircraft would have shown up on the Canaries routes, every type IB flies ends up doing MAD-LPA and MAD-TFN at one time or another....but its unlikely that the A330s were intended as an A300 replacement or that the A330s would be dedicated to the Canaries routes......its simply too much aircraft for that role and not especially well suited for shorter haul segments.
