so i just read online that Aloha Airlines will be discontinueing service from SAN-RNO by July 5th. RNO has seen many flights from AQ to BUR (i think), SNA, and recently SAN, but AQ has been discontinueing the service. why is AQ just "playing" w/ RNO? why not have a continueing service to another city "possibly" more profitable...say...SLC, or some other city.
pretty much what i'm getting at in this post is why RNO is always seeing additions and discontinuations from AQ.
please share any thoughts that come to mind. i think AQ has an AWSOME product...but why can't they make some flights work?

seems almost like our flights...good example was our ATL flights...leaving ATL at 6am (ish) to LGB/OAK (at least near the end of ATL being in our route system). but flying to a city that is BIG on gambling (LAS/RNO)...flt times outta be leaving the city at NIGHT time and arriving at night or morning time.

I think it may have to do with the fact that AQ is getting 3 73Gs repo'ed....at least that is what our station manager in SAN was telling my crew this morning. We'll see if this is true in the coming weeks.

A combination of factors are in play here - AQ will be returing three 73Gs shortly, the RNO-SAN flight was not working for whatever reason (low demand, bad times, etc) and RNO is a difficult market.......thus the tag-on segment will be dropped.
I would guess that AQ will be forced to adjust its schedule rather signficantly in connection with returning the 73Gs - any further info?

I think the traffic on Hawai'i-RNO only justifies one flight, so they kept RNO-SNA b/c it has always been the best performing of their tag-ons. The other SNA flights have been retimed so that RNO passengers can connect to HNL and KOA and back to RNO.
They have never really been after the RNO-SoCal market, their primary goal is to move people between Hawai'i and RNO so if that traffic only justifies one flight, one flight is all they will offer. They were trying to offer direct service to both HNL and OGG, but it works best with just OGG and connections from HNL.

At RNO we were thrilled to get our first AQ service about a year or so ago-- the second and third flights were icing on the cake. Now that #2 and #3 flights are going away, we are still left with the one we started with, so I really can't complain.
Kind of surprising that WN only has daily service to one city--LAX-- out of Reno. I bet they could do well with BUR, SNA, ONT, and/or SAN. I believe SAN is our largest O&D market without non-stop service.

SAN-RNO was ill-timed and SAN-OGG can stand alone without making a tag operation unecessary.
Also AQ scheduled RNO-SNA-Hawaii and RNO-SAN-Hawaii at roughly the same time so it fractured the traffic between SNA and SAN. SNA has been around longer therefore it retained RNO tag.
Because of the repo - I expect discontinuation of SAN-HNL by AQ. In fact, the nonstop is not bookable on the AQ website from late August onward. This flight was also ill-timed. What SAN needs is a HNL-SAN redeye - not an early morning flight. Also the SAN-HNL flight left in the evening - in every market they have tried this it has done poorly.

Originally, most of the tag-ons AQ added to their transpac flights were to increase aircraft utilization or for maintenance reasons. AQ used to have a lot of tag-ons to LAS because that's where their maintenace was done.

This is true - and one of, what I see as, the problem with AQs mainland service. Flight schedules are poor, limited service (one flight a day), they go into secondary markets and they go in/out of markets quickly. Aloha made a sales call and asked if I couldn't move some of our HNL/LAX business over to SNA, and some of our HNL/SFO business over to OAK. Well if their destination is LAX and SFO (respectively) no, I can't, and no I can't ask them to drive between the cities just to give you the business!
Inflight service I've heard though is very good .. they just need to "find" the right markets and time their flights better. Perhaps fewer markets with more frequent service would be a better way to go.
