Why No Low-cost Asian Carriers To Taipei?

As I do live in taipei, I would love a low cost carrier to start service to Taiwan. Why don't they?

The PRC still claims Formosa.

The PRC frowns upon airlines serving both Taipei and cities on the mainland.

I believe Jetstar Asia flies to TPE from SIN.
Low cost boom has yet to take-off in East Asia except in Malaysia & Thailand, and to some degree Indonesia.
This is because of still restrictive bilaterals between countries or high barriers to start-up LCCs. When partial or entire Asian Open Skies come to fruition, then watchout for the LCCs, but it will still take some time.

I don't think these are true any more . . . you certainly won't see airlines adopting different names and liveries like in the 90s - quite a lot of airlines now fly to both, even CX is doing this! And let's not forget the charter direct flights between the mainland and Taiwan earlier this year.

And the Republic of China (that's the Taiwanese Government), legally at least, still claims Mainland China, even if it is not part of their political rhetoric any more. Btw it's TAIWAN, not Formosa . . . sorry to be pedantic.

You are wrong on this.

There are a lot of national airline that can't fly into Taiwan, such as LH/BA/KLM when they served taipei.

CX has always been serving taipei due to speicakl negotiation between HKG and Taiwan. So that can't be confused with PRC babaric insistence on forbidding national carrier operating schedule service.

That's why KE when operating into Taiwan right now is under charter not schedule service.

You're using past tense mate ... I wonder what will happen if they applied now?

Besides CX, quite a few other Asian carriers now fly to both mainland China and Taiwan, SQ probably being the most prominent. And hasn't Jetstar Asia got approval to fly to Shanghai as well as flying to TPE?

KL still flies to TPE via BKK with KLM Asia titled aircraft.
BA & AF used to provide service but BA can easily codeshare with CX.
Old Swissair flew to TPE as well with MD-11s.

S.Korea and Taiwan can now provide scheduled service between each other starting this spring.

Taiwan probably has too many carriers currently and there will certainly be a shake-down when the new fast-train service starts up between Taipei & Kaohsiung. Some of the smaller airlines are tied to their bigger brothers (eg. B7 with BR, AE with CI). Nevertheless, it will be a exciting next few years regardless of the proliferation LCCs in Taiwan.
