Air Madrid To Toluca?

Question you guys.

Why is it that Air Madrid chooses to fly to Toluca's airport as their gateway to Mexico City when isn't Queretaro's brand new squeaky clean airport better suited for such operation. I'm wondering?

It is obvious that they didn't choose MEX due to the current reciprocal air treaties in effect between Mexico and Spain.

I think one of the main reasons is that QET is still way off from being the best suited airport in the area for such an operation! Plus, less people living in the area.

I live near MEX airport and I've driven from here to TLC and I've done only 20 minutes to Santa Fé plus 35-40 at the toll road.. that's near to an hour! So just imagine all the potencial TLC airport has.

I think QET airport will serve as domestic airport with several flights to the US from MX and cargo operations., but other than that I don't see them having transcon flights unless you start a GDL-QET-Europe or QET-MTY-Europe route! Perhaps that could work! Oh also... considering QET's tarmac zone they will be MEX's new alternate airport.

QET or QRO or whatever the heck its code is is very far away from the major business, residential and tourist areas of Mexico City. TLC on the other hand is just a tad over 30 minutes away from Santa Fe and less than 45 minutes away from the Lomas, Virreyes, Bosques, Tecamachalco, Herradura, Interlomas high-income residential neighborhoods. Polanco and La Condesa are in a good day less than one hour away. Where would you fly to?


Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I don't know the geography of Mexico City very well. I do have an idea of where Toluca is located and know that it's very close to the well off neighborhoods that you mention EddieDude, especially the brand new business district of Santa Fe, but the fact that TLC is still an odd-ball of an airport with very weak passenger levels (until now, but due to change) makes me think that the infrastructure there might be somewhat capable, but not completely adequate for the operation that's going to take effect (Based on my own ignorant assumption Big grin). From what I've heard, (and please correct me if I'm wrong), that area, or was it Santa Fe(?) is difficult to get to with traffic and considering that the road network to that part of the city is not properly in place (I recall the building of some bridges in the works that will link Mexico City with Santa Fe?) it is not easy to reach at certain times of the day.

I was also thinking about the elevation which Toluca is located in. Isn't it that it's situated in a place that's even higher than the dry lake bed of Mexico City?

On the other hand, I do believe and have no doubt that the need for such operation is extremely needed out of any airport Mexico City.

Again, I might be totally wrong, since technically I don't know Mexico City. But based on both your answers, it looks like Air Madrid did its homework.

Well, Santa Fe and the Toluca highway are places that can be hard to reach due to traffic during rush hour. I commute Polanco-Santa Fe-Polanco every day and what I did to avoid traffic was get a membership with a fitness club in Santa Fe, so I leave my home everyday at 6 or 6:30. My drive never exceeds 14 minutes (maybe 20 when la Ibero is open for the spring and fall quarters), and since I never leave the office before 20:30, my drive back home is also quite fast (approx. 15 minutes too, subject to concerts at the Auditorio Nacional and the like). When I feel brave enough to go home for lunch, I need to leave my office at 13:59 or earlier, or else it's a 35 min. + task. The problem with Santa Fe is that there are only 2 major access roads: Constituyentes, which is a nightmare of robberies, traffic, polution, heavy trucks and non-synched stoplights (the latter is aggravated by people trying to make left turns or U turns) and Paseo de la Reforma, which permits a beautiful scenic drive through one of the nicest neighborhoods in the world (but sadly, full of traffic too). Other accesses to Santa Fe are really minor: Camino Real a Toluca which crosses the "old" Santa Fe (bad place), the curves which let you go from the south side to Santa Fe through the Desierto de los Leones road (also a horrible place), the "bridges" that are new roads that connect with bridges the hills of the south side and Santa Fe (I personally don't think they qualify as a major access but southern side dwellers will know better than me), the Bosques de las Lomas tunnels and a small entrance from the Toluca freeway that goes down a small hill full of condos and takes you to Vasco de Quiroga near the shopping mall.

Don't know the exact elevation of Toluca but it is probably around 800-1,000 ft. higher than Mexico City.

I live and work in TLC, and I think that people living in any place around Mexico City, may be even in Puebla , where exist a very large Spanish community will be happy to come to TLC to Catch a flight to Europe.

Schedules for the flight are as Follows:

NM 1732 TLC MAD 00:55 18:55
NM 1721 MAD TLC 18;10 22:55

Obviously NO RUSH Hours in MEX because you will have to Check- in by 2230-23:00 hrs That is to Leave Mexico city around 9 1/2 or 10 pm

I see! Thanks Eddie, for your very detailed and informative driving information that explains access to TLC. I guess there will be no problem there. And I guess that we can also expect to see news reports in the coming future if Air Madrid proves to be a success in Mexico City by using Toluca and the public's response to the flight and the airport and thus perhaps see this event as the detonator of many big news to come for TLC and its surrounding neighborhoods.

By the Way, today in the official opening ceremony of MAGNITUR flight, to CUN Montiel governor make the official announcement of Air Madrid TLC-MAD from Aug 3rd.

I spoke with the Tourism Secretary of the State of Mexico and one Official from SCT and they told me about there is still missing one permit for NM to start operations. I think this is a small paper work that will be eased by Montiel Administration, in order to start flights in the planed date. This is obviously a very good farewell for Montiel¨s Administration (ending Sep 05) in the communication sector
