About 3 years after SA stopped service JNB-BKK on their 747SP's, TG is resuming the service 3 Dec on their new 3 class A340-600. This will probably be a code-share flight with SA as SA is going into the Star Alliance.

TG had first announced that this service would run with MD11 equipment. I guess they've come to their senses and realized that the MD11 in the configuaration it is right now is not really the appropriate equipment to market this new service with. Still, I will only believe this when I see it, as TG has previously several times announced this service - last time around they talked about daily B744 service. Nevertheless, the schedule's being published seems to be an indicator that they're really planning to start this time.

Probably to suit business needs. Look at the schedules from JNB to Europe - you will generally see 2 BA 744s, a VS bird plus many other european carriers sitting on the stands ALL day. That's a lot of down time!

To facilitate connection to/from other part of Asia. From other part of Asia, pax can connect easily to the BKK-JNB midnight flight. On the return flight, pax can connect with TG morning flight in BKK to almost all Asian destinations. This schedule also makes it possible for codesharing an onward flight with SAA.
Most of TG's european flights are also scheduled this way.

Correct.
Should TG have a 2-hour layover and depart JNB at 08h20, I predict (IMMHO) that they will have quite poor loads. JNB is SAA's hub and TG needs connecting pax from regional and domestic flights in order to fill their flights to capacity.
The first domestic flights of each day (CPT, DUR, PLZ, etc) only arrive in JNB at about 08h00. Therefore a 08h20 TG departure wouldn't make sense at all. TG needs to synchronise the entire operation very carefully as they also have to keep connecting pax, onwards from BKK in mind. Would it make sense to leave JNB at 08h20 and arrive in BKK just after 00h00?? For instance, how many TG flights leave BKK at that time of the morning - we have to take in consideration that BKK may not be some passengers' final destination?
Have a look at the rest of the Asian carriers operating to and from JNB. Despite early morning arrivals in JNB at about 06h00; CX, SQ and MH all leave JNB after 12h00.
Hope this explains your query.

Quoting Udo (Reply 10): How would that affect EK? They come from completely different directions.
EK currently is the cheapest option between JNB-BKK-JNB, which may be what AF022 is referring to. However, TG will not necessarily be the cheapest option between JNB-BKK-JNB once their services commence.
That said, even though SA and QF fly directly to PER and SYD respectively, EK still whip their buts with excellent fares most of the time.

Its good to see that TG will use its new A340-600s on this route, I found the original choice of the MD11s a bit odd for a route such as JNB-BKK. AMS, AKL, MEL, ZRH, CDG and even LAX were once mentioned as A346 cities - the new JNB flight operating with the A346 may impact these plans as, I believe, that TG has ordered only 6 of the type and the European routes require 2 aircraft to maintain a daily service.
Any further information on how TG plans to utilize its A346s and the M11s? Will AKL remain with the M11 once it gets its dedicated flight from BKK?

TG is gonna fly to AMS with the 346!?
There have been several reports/rumors that TG wants to reopen the AMS route, this time with a daily dedicated nonstop service to BKK (unlike TG's past services which had been via ZRH or as a stopover on a LHR-AMS-BKK flight)......I have heard that TG is/was planning to reopen the AMS route WHEN the A346s were delivered (meaning that the AMS-BKK flight could be flown with any longhaul type and TG was simply waiting for more longhaul equipment to be delivered), and I have also heard that TG is/was planning to reopen the AMS route WITH the A346 once they were delivered. I have no idea which is true, and, to date, TG has not announced the AMS route but instead has said it would begin service on the BKK-JNB route and the BKK-Moscow route.
Something is up - TG does want to get back to AMS - when, and with what equipment are still up in the air.

I think that the only thing that IS CERTAIN is that it is currently a movimng feast, and likely to change.
Given that the A346 has a big F/J section (68 seats), you can probably bet that the A346 will go to markets which has higher J class prospects. Therefore MEL would rank up there, and I would guess would get the A346 at AKL's expense. With only 6 A346's, not every proposed A346 market will get one.
FYI - MEL can be operated on a daily basis with one aircraft.

I couldn't agree with you more! It seems as if SA now wants to revive the JNB-BKK-JNB route themselves, according to newspaper reports. There is a 747-SP in SA colours parked on the Eastern side of JNB at some of the maintenance hangers.....................
