Does anybody know of major airports with unusual approaches such as to the old Kai Tak or to Kathmandu
The approach to Kathmandu (KTM) is unusual because of high ground under the approach, with mountains rising to about 8000' about 10 miles from the threshold ( airport elevation is about 4500' ). When I flew in with Gulf Air it felt really strange as the 767-300 has to be in landing configuration before the final descent. This means you can see the flaps extend and feel the gear drop and the aircraft slowing while still flying level and at 11000 feet or so. Once clear of the mountains its nose down into the valley with a 6 degree glideslope "dive" for ten miles onto the runway.

Anyone know of other major airports with strange approaches ?

PS if you're flying with Gulf Traveller try to sit in the forward cabin as the seat pitch in that section is about 34" and very comfy.

Chris
