L1011 operator Star Air seems to plan a new subsidiary, Starjet, based in the UAE. 9L-LED has been reregistered to A6-ESM and is currently at GAMCO in AUH. The airline is looking for staff here in the UAE. If anyone has more info, such as what kind of ops they are planning and from which base, it would be appreciated.

What kind of ops? Probably more money laundering for Al Quaeda. At least that's what has been rumored about their Austrian offspring.

Nothing suspicious recorded. But before I would sign up with them I'd ask for a few pay checks in advance... Star Air formed by Paddy McKay and Basem Mishal. Airline had it's operating license revoked by Sierra Leone 09/04 and in Jordan 01/05 according to aerotransport database. Same owners are behind such gems as AirLeone and Air Universal. Personally I don't trust any airline that plays the hide and seek game i.e. register under the 3D, 3C, 9L, 9Q, TL, A8 (?) or ER codes, recruit crew from yet other countries and setup shop in Sharjah (UAE).

Just got this report:

"This aircraft operated with about 9 hours delay the flight OA331/ OA334 to/from Larnaca instead of the scheduled OA A343 and caused many problems as the crew was not familiar with either the inbound STAR (Pafos1A) or outbound SID (Daros 1D) and instead flew completely on their own creating potentially hazardous situations with other LCA traffic. Thankfully, my
alert colleagues on duty at Larnaca helped to avert nasty situations!

msn 1222 ; re-registered A6-BSM; went on to Paris-CDG 5. Juli 2005. On take-off #1 engine fire, could not
gain altitude and emergency landing at CDG !"

R3500vdp is sadly mistaken when he lumps Star Air in the same category as Air Universal.
Oddly enough, the latter has just about completed its process to obtain a JAR operating certificate, and additional 747's are in the works.
A rather well run company Air Universal is, and pays its bills/salaries on time.

Spotters, OTOH, generally have no particular idea about the inner workings of airlines in general, and charter airlines in particular.

Suggest you back up your so called 'knowledge' about particular airlines, R3500vdp, so that you don't prove you are a bigger fool than has already been aptly demonstrated.

And, as for TriStar500, you might be surprised to learn the Air Universal TriStars are now engaged doing sub-service for Libyan Arab Airlines, as LAA's A300-600's seem to be on the ground more often than in the air.
The -250 in particular, is doing about ten hours per day, with nil defects, generally.
How do I know, you ask?

I personally fly it nearly every day.
In the LHS, of course.

@411A: I heard LAA would also be wet-leasing a 1011 from Air Rum. Are both of Air Universal's 1011s currently wet-leased to LAA? And do you know the location of the two 747s, are they still in AMS and ORY?
Thanks a lot

@411: It is good to hear that at least some airlines keep the old L1011 in good shape.  Smile However, Air Universal seems to be more of an exception than the rule.

One of Air Universal's 747's is currently leased to Iran Air, Thomas_Jaeger, and the other is to be be leased to PIA shortly, so I have been informed.
A third, under negotiations now, will be leased to Iran Air in the not too distant future.
Air Rum has indeed been in TIP trying to get a piece of the LAA action, and may well do so, if they can prove reliability...not an easy task for this charter airline, as past operations have well proven.
In addition, another crew has been requested by LAA for further ops with Air Universal's other TriStar, which has 360 all economy seating.

And yes, TriStar500, Air Universal is quite the exception, so far as TriStar operators go.

My dad flew for Air Universal as a B747 instructor. You may have come across him in tripoli or Benghazi during the Umra flights for LAA last year.

Is LAA using the tristar only for flights to Jeddah?

I will have you know that ATA is keeping its fleet of 5 L1011s in great condition.  Wink Some of us still love those golden oldies!!

And I can vouch for how hard it is to keep those things maintained. Nobody makes parts for that plane anymore and few maintain the parts that are already out there. So the experience and general knowledge about how to keep them running is slowly going away. Sad, but the TriStars are slowly fading into their own piece of history.  Sad

Thus this airline is using the same L1011s the Jordan Star Air used and whose aircraft were banned from Dutch airports and got Onur Air into trouble?????

BTW does anyone know what thye status is of the Air Universal 747 at AMS??? The last time I was at AMS it was still standing on the tarmac doing nothing.
