Air UK: Has Anyone Got Any Information?

Hello everyone. its great to be a member of www.airliners.net. I need your help

Has anyone got any information about Air UK, such as the fleet it operated, the routes it covered, the dates it was taken over etc etc.

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated. I know a fair bit of info but need to be certain of a few things as I cannot for the life of me find ANY INFORMATION online!

I know it was totally bought out by KLM and then turned into KLM UK and Buzz, then further bought by Ryanair, but I need to know what happened to it as I am interested in using the name again. My DREAM is to start an airline, courtesy of my dads company !!!

AirUK was based in Stansted, it operated a fleet of F100, Bae145, F50 & F27 aircraft to destinations throughout the UK and to northern Europe.

AirUk now operates as KLM Cityhopper feeding flights to Amsterdam from several UK regional airports. In its day it was a major force on the Glasgow to London routes, when it was taken over by KLM this route was discontinued, the gap only recently being filled by LCC in recent years.

I've got plenty of info on this airline, need any further help give me a shout.

I flew Air UK numerous times in the early 80's on the LHR-GCI route. They took over that route from BA in 1980 (I think) and used HP Heralds that had originally belonged to BIA (British Island Airways), infact they were originally painted in a hybrid scheme involving the BIA fuselage with an Air UK tail. I believe they have one of those on display at Duxford.

At the time they also had F27's, but went on to diversify over the years.

If you do a search on the Photo page for Air UK, you'll see the range of aircraft they had and the years that they were around.

Air UK was bought by KLM and up until last year was operating under the name 'KLM UK'.

That has now changed and KLM UK has now been merged into KLM Cityhopper.

When KLM bought Air UK, i think they sold the BAE 146's, F27's and F-50's almost immediately but the F-70's and F-100's are still running.

Sorry my mistake. I saw a F-100 in Air UK but i thought it was a F-70. The angle of pic i guess.

It's a Dart Herald. Nice looking plane, but I've never caught it (or the Viscount, which is current undergoing some serious restoration, with the tail off and the paint being stripped) open for walk-throughs.

From memory Air UK was created in 1979 from a merger between BIA and Air Anglia. Main base was at STN and the core fleet was F.27s although they kept the Heralds for a while and also operated Bandeirantes which flew from SEN amongst other places. When BA took over BCAL and most of BCALs European routes were distributed to other carriers Air UK took over the LGW to GLA and EDI services and used 146s. By the early 90's the fleet consisted of 146s and F50s, mainly based at STN.

I've got an old book at home called British Civil Aviation (or something) by Gunther Endres which has profiles of all the UK based airlines at the time...I'll dig it out when I get a chance and let you know if there is anything relevent in there.

Air UK were formed in 1980 through the merging of Air Anglia, BIA and Air Wales (nothing to do with the current Air Wales!).

The combined fleet at that time was a mixed bag of 1-11's, F28, F27's, Herald's and Bandeirante's.

A handful of Shorts 330's and 360's were purchased in the mid 1980's and the 1-11's and F28 were replaced by 146's, which quickly grew in numbers as the network expanded.

When BCal was integrated into BA (1988?), BA were forced to surrender the LGW-EDI and GLA services which Air UK took over. F100's began to join the fleet and F50's replaced most of the F27's. Two ATR72's were leased towards the end of Air UK's life to operated the SOU-JER and GCI services but these routes were quickly dropped after becoming KLM UK in 1998.

The main UK airports served by Air UK during its existance were:

Aberdeen
Belfast International
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Newcastle
Teesside
Humberside
Leeds/Bradford
Norwich (which was formerly it's base and remained as it's engineering HQ)
Stansted
Heathrow
Southampton
Jersey
Guernsey

Over the years, services also came and went from:

Cardiff
Southend
Blackpool
Isle of Man
East Midlands
Manchester

You're lucky you never got to fly in one - they were horrible!! It was flying in those Air UK Heralds that actually made me very scared of flying for a long time. Those things were donkey's years old even when Air UK took them over from BIA in 79/80. They would shake, rattle and creak their way down to Guernsey, all the time leaving a trail of fluids dripping from the screaming engines...well that's how I remember them anyway! I used to consider myself lucky for getting to and from Guernsey alive and kicking and able to tell the tale. OK, maybe slightly irrational of me, but that's how my early teenage brain perceived those flights!

I flew them on their "Sterling Service" BAe 146 from Gatwick to Edinburgh and have fond memories of Air UK.
