Sat at HKG at the moment and realised that aircrafts are using r/w25R for takeoff! I thought that runway25R was used specifically for landing and 25L was designated for takeoff (except for cargo)

So, any explanation or is it the norm now that the plane could request any runway for take off?

p.s. 777LR demonstrator is in HK at the moment

Overnight upto 9am one runway is closed, so thats why they are departing on 25R. My office is at the freight place and the 772LR is off to Gatwick at about 10am. Due back in Hong Kong on the 11th.

Normal ops at HKG are departures on 25R and freighter arrivals on 25R. 25L is normally landing for pax a/c only with an occasional departure sandwiched in between.

During night ops, there is usually one runway closed.
